Hello WAM!mers!

*We are happy to announce five fantastic women have joined the leadership
of WAM! Vancouver, and will be coordinating the chapter for the foreseeable
future. *Please see their bios below (and a picture of them working
together to hone in on their shared passions within the spheres of feminism
and media work - how awesome is that?)

These women look forward to connecting with you as they carry on the work
of WAM! Vancouver: providing space for people to critique, organize
against, create and respond to all forms of media, towards the goals of
fostering gender justice and amplifying all women's voices in the diverse
array of media that so powerfully shape our lives.

Thank you for helping us welcoming them to their roles, and to the
community of feminist media makers in Vancouver.

Best,

Natalie Hill and Jarrah Hodge, outgoing WAM! Vancouver Chapter Leads

Aleks Besan
As a passionate communicator who values constant learning, Aleks currently
works as the Education Program Coordinator at Check Your Head, a
youth-focused non-profit which provides social & environmental education
through a peer led model. She feels deeply drawn to feminist spaces and has
loved volunteering at Battered Women's Support Services since last year.
Born in Latvia and with Russian as her first language, Aleks now proudly
resides in vibrant East Van where she spends her free time learning
Spanish, practicing digital illustration, and enjoying midnight strolls.

Nicky Cairncross
Nicky Cairncross has several years of front line experience within
non-profit organizations supporting children and families with complex
emotional, behavioural, and developmental needs. She is a dedicated
volunteer with Women Against Violence Against Women (WAVAW) where she
educates the public about violence against marginalized populations,
anti-oppression, and consent. Most recently she has spearheaded a monthly
feminist music bingo night that has brought in consistent donations for
WAVAW. Nicky is excited to begin putting her energy towards new projects
and professional development with WAM-Vancouver!

Jonanne Gage
Jonanne Gage spends her days developing, coordinating, and evaluating
programs that promote media literacy, self-esteem, and feminist
perspectives in youth. Meanwhile, by night, she writes historical fiction
as a means of exploring alternate narratives surrounding women in history.
She also volunteers for a major fan fiction website, and when not stuck
behind a computer can be found either reading, at the gym, or in a
second-hand store.Kirsten Larsen

Michelle Kelm
Michelle Kelm is currently pursuing a Masters degree in Creative Writing at
UBC. Her thesis will be a collection of short stories bound together by
themes of feminism, patriarchy and oppression in the human world and in
nature. Michelle has written for the Tyee and had short fiction published
in literary journals.

Kirsten Larsen
Kirsten is a passionate feminist who loves the ocean, music and the
mountains making Vancouver a perfect home for her. She works for Atira
Women's Resource Society where she focuses on ending violence against women
and children. She has been involved in many different feminist communities
and is excited to begin working as a WAM! Coordinator alongside some
amazing women.
