Dear WAM!



I'm writing to recruit participants for a research project headed by Dr.
Judith Taylor at UofT Sociology. Briefly, it concerns efforts to revitalize
the National Action Committee on the Status of Women (NAC) during the
period 2004-2006, and the failure of this initiative. We've almost
interviewed 40 feminists in Toronto, and are now expanding our sample to
include voices from Vancouver, Calgary, and Halifax. Given your extensive
engagement with gender justice in the media, I'm eager to speak with
someone from WAM! when I'm in Vancouver in August.



NAC was a Canadian feminist organization founded in 1971 as a response to a
report conducted by the Royal Commission on the Status of Women. Growing
over the years to incorporate over 700 member organizations, to date NAC is
one of the largest national feminist organizations in Canadian history.
Beyond organizing to address Royal Commission recommendations about birth
control, day care, educational opportunities, and pensions for women, NAC
expanded to address diverse feminist issues including same-sex rights,
violence against women, povery, and racism. Although NAC never formally
dissolved, it effectively dissolved following its 2006 Annual General
Meeting.



Please note that this project is more concerned with respondents' views on
whether a national feminist organization should exist rather than how
well-versed respondents are with NAC's history and movement trajectory.
Also note that our research team does not have a particular position or
priority for how Canadian feminism should organize at this time.
Respondents should feel free to express any kind of political orientation
or set of concerns they may have. The research team also understands that
while our sample includes those who are members of various organizations,
participants are speaking on behalf of themselves and not the organizations.
