In 1998 an Italian court overturned a rape charge because the victim was wearing tight jeans. The ruling stated that because the victim's jeans were tight, she had to have helped remove them and as a result gave consent to her attacker. Enraged by the verdict, people around the world launched into protest, showing support for the victim by wearing denim to their places of work.
The theme for this week’s SAAM is supporting survivors. Did you know that, 4 out of 5 women in university experience violence in their intimate relationships (Canadian Federation of Students – Ontario, 2013<http://cfsontario.ca/downloads/CFS_factsheet_antiviolence.pdf>)? You can show your support by coming to a number of events and workshops taking place this week. All events are free of cost. You can click on the links below to find out more or visit our website students.ubc.ca/saam<http://students.ubc.ca/livewell/topics/sexual-assault/sexual-assault-awareness-month> and follow us on Twitter at #saamUBC.
We are also excited to announce that the Wellness Centre will be hosting an event, Helping Hands, on January 27th, from 1-4 p.m. in Irving K. Barber Learning Centre. Students can learn about key elements of a healthy relationship, trace their hands on a piece of paper, and write a note of encouragement inside their hand. Fun giveaways will be available!
