As a member of FIRST and a strong ally of sex workers, I strongly recommend you take Meghan's biases into account. Fine to source things there, but please be aware. Thanks!

With respect to a news hook for the missing and murdered women story, on December 1st FAFIA, Canada's Feminists for International Action, issued a heads-up about two reports that will be coming out this spring from international bodies that have reviewed Canada's handling of the missing and murdered aboriginal women. Either or both of those reports could be a news peg. Meghan Murphy has a radio story about FAFIA's call-out that ran in recent issues of Groundwire and WINGS. The interviewees were Cherry Smiley and Shelagh Day. Meghan's website is feministcurrent.com - she has the entire interview with the 2 FAFIA reps on there.

Hi Trish:

Sounds like the start of something great for 2015. Good on ya!

There is always a dearth of ink spared for the Missing Women or Stolen Sisters, and abuse to women in general for that matter. We know that there are still serial killers at large and more girls and women have disappeared since Picton was arrested, yet we never hear about it. An event comes up such as the girls in Alberta? (see, even I'm not sure) and as soon as the funeral is over it disappears like fog. And even the high profiles like Ghomeshi will only keep the subject of abuse to women in the headlines until the trial is over and after his lawyer tears those women apart.

I tried to find out from the Mounties if there have been any more missing girls and women and the answer was that it was too difficult to sort them out of the hundreds of murdered and missing women each year. I asked what about the families because they could certainly identify them and the answer from the nice young constable was that there was such disfunction to have to deal with that they could not possibly do that. So, indifference galore is still there.

No journalist has ever taken this on and it would be a great thing if you did, Trish. Keeping on top of it, reporting changes and lack of attention to it regularly would keep it before the public for the first time. It's local but of course the Harper misconception of abuse and his immoveable obstinacy of what to do about it. It happens that he's going to call an election next year! Between this and the local vets there is lots to float banners about.

Happy landing with your new jobs, Trish. Looking fwd to reading them.

Cheers

Hi all,

In the New Year , I am becoming a regular columnist for two local papers. Twice monthly, I will be writing a column for the Vancouver Courier . Additionally, every Monday, my new civic affairs column, "The City Holler" will appear in the Metro Vancouver newspaper.

I'm keen to use this public profile to address issues around social justice, civic engagement and representation.

I'm sharing this news not only because I am excited(!), but because I am warmly inviting you to send me story ideas, to raise the alarm when a new issue emerges, or to tell me about the Vancouver-based projects you're working on.

I'm also continuing as a panelist on Global News: BC 1 's Unfiltered with Jill Krop . Again, I can suggest topics to the producers and would love to hear your tips on timely topic s.

Please be in touch!

Kind Regards,

Trish
