Hi everyone,

The documentary film festival DOXA is coming up from April 30 to May 10 and
there are a lot of films worth checking out, but a couple in particular
that we wanted to highlight.

1. *GTFO: Get the F&#% Out* <http://www.doxafestival.ca/film/gtfo>, a movie
about women in gaming. WAM! Van is proud to be the community partner for
this film. GTFO, a film by American director Shannon Sun-Higginson, "pries
open the video game world to explore a 20 billion dollar industry that is
riddled with discrimination and misogyny." It was sparked by the public
display of harassment against Dragon Age writer Jennifer Hepler in 2012.

*When:* Saturday, May 9 at 4:30 p.m.
*Where:* The Cinematheque
*Tickets: *$13 general admission/$11 students and seniors (no festival
membership required)

Check out the article on the WAM! Van chapter page

for more info on the film and reserving your tickets.

2. <http://www.doxafestival.ca/film/shesbeautiful>*She's Beautiful When
She's Angry <http://www.doxafestival.ca/film/shesbeautiful> *is a
documentary by Mary Dore, which explores the women's movement in the US
from 1966 to 1971. Ever since it came out in late 2014 it's been getting
rave reviews from feminist and mainstream media critics. Using extensive
interviews and archival footage, Dore looks at various tactics activists
used, the issues they organized around, and doesn't shy away from
discussing the struggle faced by lesbians and women of colour to be
meaningfully included.

*When:* Tuesday, May 5 at 6:00 p.m.
*Where: *The Cinematheque
*Tickets (festival membership required): *$13 general admission or $16 if
you need a festival membershipl/$11 for seniors and students or $14 for
seniors and students for ticket plus festival membership.

The screening will be followed by a post-film discussion with me on behalf
of WAM! Van and Gender Focus, and Lucia Lorenzi. For those of you who don't
know Lucia, she is a doctoral candidate in the Department of English at the
UBC, as well as an anti-violence blogger at Rabble.ca. Her activism focuses
largely on sexual assault in educational institutions. Her research
interests include trauma theory and Canadian Literature, and her
dissertation examines the relationship between silence and sexual violence.

Click here for more info on the screening and to reserve your tickets
<http://www.doxafestival.ca/film/shesbeautiful>.

And please let me know if you're planning on attending either screening.
We'd love to connect with other WAMmers in person and maybe grab coffee
before or after the films.

All the best,

Jarrah
on behalf of the WAM! Van organizing group
