[Wamvan] Our feminist picks for VIFF 2014 - on now!

Hello WAM!mers!

The Vancouver International Film Festival (VIFF) is underway once again.
There are quite a few films by women directions, and look to be some
awesome feminist or of-feminist-interest films on the schedule.

WAM! Van has a few events in the works for the next few weeks (more details
to come shortly), so we will not be planning a WAM! Van VIFF outing this
year.

That said - *please use this thread to organize with one another!* Toss out
what films your interested in seeing at what times, and use this as a way
to find fellow movie-goers. Feminist film-going is more fun with a buddy!

   - Something Must Break

   By a trans woman director: While identities and genders are alluringly
   fluid in Ester Martin Bergsmark’s narrative debut, the desire for

   side, Sebastian—who sometimes prefers to be called Ellie—falls hard for
   Andreas, a straight man. But when Andreas proves a fast friend but
   reluctant lover, Ellie rushes to the fore.

   "Eccentric, disturbing mockumentary" in which director Kaouther Ben
   Hania sets out to solve a mystery, speak truth to power and expose a

   A heartfelt and uncompromising portrait of contemporary Aboriginal life.
   Gulpilil drew on his own troubles while co-writing the story of
   down-on-his-luck Charlie, so besieged by family members that he moves out
   of his own house to live in a makeshift tin shelter. As Charlie attempts to
   draw on his Aboriginal traditions to restart his life, the harsh realities
   of misconceived government directives make it increasingly impossible for
   him…

   So much can happen in a year. For instance, your mom can transition from
   female to male. Such is the case in Sophie Hyde’s provocative, authentic
   and refreshingly modern coming-of-age tale. Handled with care and
   restraint, “(this) accessible narrative experiment boasts breakout talent
   in front of and behind the camera."
