Hello WAM!mers!
The Vancouver International Film Festival (VIFF) is underway once again.
There are quite a few films by women directions, and look to be some
awesome feminist or of-feminist-interest films on the schedule.
WAM! Van has a few events in the works for the next few weeks (more details
to come shortly), so we will not be planning a WAM! Van VIFF outing this
year.
That said - *please use this thread to organize with one another!* Toss out
what films your interested in seeing at what times, and use this as a way
to find fellow movie-goers. Feminist film-going is more fun with a buddy!
Below is a shortlist of films that WAM!mers might be interested in:
- Something Must Break
<http://www.viff.org/festival/films/f10976-something-must-break>- Mon
Sept 29 2PM (International Village) / Thurs Oct 9th, 7PM (the Rio)
By a trans woman director: While identities and genders are alluringly
fluid in Ester Martin Bergsmark’s narrative debut, the desire for
connection is unrelenting. Initially trepidatious to explore a feminine
side, Sebastian—who sometimes prefers to be called Ellie—falls hard for
Andreas, a straight man. But when Andreas proves a fast friend but
reluctant lover, Ellie rushes to the fore.
- Challat of Tunis
<http://www.viff.org/festival/films/f13031-challat-of-tunis> - Thurs Oct
2 7PM / Sun Oct 5, 3PM at Cinematheque
"Eccentric, disturbing mockumentary" in which director Kaouther Ben
Hania sets out to solve a mystery, speak truth to power and expose a
culture of misogyny in Tunisia.
- Charlie's Country
<http://www.viff.org/festival/films/f12088-charlies-country> - Sat Oct 4
4:15PM (Cinematheque) / Tues Oct 7 11AM (SFU Woodwards) / Friday Oct 10
6:30PM (SFU Woodwards)
A heartfelt and uncompromising portrait of contemporary Aboriginal life.
Gulpilil drew on his own troubles while co-writing the story of
down-on-his-luck Charlie, so besieged by family members that he moves out
of his own house to live in a makeshift tin shelter. As Charlie attempts to
draw on his Aboriginal traditions to restart his life, the harsh realities
of misconceived government directives make it increasingly impossible for
him…
- 52 Tuesdays <http://www.viff.org/festival/films/f10884-52-tuesdays> -
Sat Oct 4 9PM (the Rio) / Tues Oct 7 1:30PM (SFU Woodwards)
So much can happen in a year. For instance, your mom can transition from
female to male. Such is the case in Sophie Hyde’s provocative, authentic
and refreshingly modern coming-of-age tale. Handled with care and
restraint, “(this) accessible narrative experiment boasts breakout talent
in front of and behind the camera."
- Hole <http://www.viff.org/festival/films/f12186-hole> - Mon Sept 29
8:30PM (Int'l Village) / Tues Oct 7 4:30PM (Vancity)
An isolated and disabled man yearns to experience intimacy in a world
that would rather ignore him.
- Luk'Luk'i: Mother
<http://www.viff.org/festival/films/f14331-lukluki-mother> (short) - Wed
Oct 1 8:30PM (Int'l Village) / Thurs Oct 9 4:45PM (Vancity)
A full-time mother/part-time sex-worker goes missing on the Downtown
Eastside during the 2010 Winter Olympics.
