Yep - Rhizome was taken over as a social enterprise by the folks at a nearby United Church ... and renamed Heartwood ... fabulous project and meeting space ... recommend you contact them and see about a day and time ... best, DD.

Refreshing this conversation!

When are you arriving in Vancouver Jenna?

As I think you saw in a separate, complementary message chain on this event, someone recommend Heartwood Community Cafe as a venue, formerly Rhizome (most WAM!mers will remember Rhizome....). Heartwood is an LGBTQ welcoming space, emphasizing social justice and community organizing, that also seems to be spiritually oriented.

Sounds perfect to me. Only problem is, they're closed on Mondays!

I'll reach out to them and see if we can book that space. Are there any other nights that week that work?

Hi everyone,

Would Mon. June 23 work for you? We can figure out a time and place for the workshop when I get to Vancouver. As I mentioned, I'm open to facilitating more than one workshop or changing the date. Please let me know!

Mavaddat, thank you for sharing Beth Anne's blog. I really appreciate it!

This idea of a feminist Christian dialogue sounds very exciting. From attending various churches here in Vancouver (though I'm atheist, I get invited regularly), I think the Christian community is so ready to hear and integrate feminism into their hermeneutics.

My friend Beth Anne wrote about sexuality from a Christian feminist perspective in a recent multi-part blog series that enthused many of her fellow Christian friends. http://notwithink.blogspot.ca/2014/03/lets-talk-about-sex-shame-part-ix.html

Hi everyone,

Thank you for the warm welcome! My residency is from June 2-June 28. I haven't received my schedule yet, but I'm sure it'll be flexible. Since I'm planning to do an event at the end of the month, the earlier would be better.

Joanna, when are you back in town? Could we set a date earlier that week? I could also facilitate more than one workshop depending on availability. Looking forward to meeting you all!

Best,
Jenna

I would be interested in attending a Spoken Word / interactive
space workshop next month (if possible) ... Living on the island
does make getting to the city more involved so my hopes are
that the day and time can work out for me.

Please and Thanks for keeping me in the loop on this Natalie
and I look forward to the possibility of meeting you Jenna and
being a part of your upcoming workshop, etc.

and, All the best to you Tami on your workshop / tour.

Hi everyone,

I wanted to pass along an invitation to all of you to be in dialogue next month about identity, in particular: queer, feminist and Christian identities (!). Let me explain…

A wonderful woman I went to journalism school with, named Jenna Tenn-Yuk recently got in touch with me. Next month she’s coming to Vancouver from Ottawa as the artist-in-residence for Vancouver Biennale. An arts festival and exhibition that runs in 2-year stints, and brings art and artists from around the world to our city.

Jenna is now a member of the listserv - welcome Jenna!

Jenna (somewhat) recently came out as gay. She is a woman of colour, and identifies as feminist. She’s also a Christian, and has struggled with reconciling these aspects of her identity. She’s written about it in places like Huffington Post and the Ottawa Citizen.

She wanted me to pass along an invitation to any feminists I know, to see if you’re interested in meeting up with her when she’s here in June. She wants to organize a spoken word workshop, or other kind of interactive space, to explore these identities – the intersections and tensions between them.

If you’re interested, let me know by posting a reply here.

Cheers – Nat

PS – a sample of Jenna’s spokenword: on being “Jamasian”
