[Wamvan] Looking for input: eating disorders, gender and media

Hi folks,

I've been invited to appear before the House of Commons Standing Committee
on the Status of Women on Monday as one of a group providing input on their
study looking at girls and women's experience with eating disorders. For
anyone not familiar with how the committees work, they're basically groups
of Members of Parliament with a makeup mirroring the House (so majority
Conservatives). They can study issues like this and make recommendations
for legislation or policy changes. This is the motion they adopted:

*It was agreed, -- That, pursuant to Standing Order 108(2), the Committee
conduct a study of eating disorders amongst girls and women, including the
nature of these diseases, what treatments are providing the most relief to
patients and where they are available, how family physicians can learn more
about eating disorders and how to treat them, what roadblocks exist to
better serve girls and women with eating disorders, and what resources
relevant stakeholders need to improve the lives of these patients*.

I only have 10 minutes, so my plan is to start off with feedback to the
committee from people I know who have direct experience with eating
disorders, in terms of what they feel the service gaps and needs are in the
system. I will likely follow that with a broader discussion of how the
media environment and education factor in.

If any WAMmers have resources, experiences or feedback for me I'd really
appreciate it - especially anything that talks about additional barriers
that might be experienced by women and girls in more marginalized
populations. This is my first time doing something like this and I want to
make sure the MPs get fair, inclusive, intersectional, practical feminist
input.

Thanks!

Jarrah
