[Wamvan] looking for story ideas

What a great opportunity to insert some feminist and anti-oppresive
analysis into mainstream platforms. Congrats Trish, and thanks for the
valubale invitation!
One issue on my mind lately is childcare - the federal NDP's last year said
they'd institute a national childcare program like Quebec's, but soon after
experts there said the program was becoming unsustainable at only $7, then
$10 a day. There's been some minor but interesting discussion on universal
access vs. sliding scale on income.
And then of course Harper announced he'd continue his 'direct to you' cash
payments for parents (a pitiful amount comparied to actual childcare costs)
and because of some sort of bureaucratic fiscal cycle stuff this means
they'll be cutting a seemingly large, lump-sum cheque to parents right
before next year's election. Unanbashed cash for votes.
I'd love to see access to affordable childcare discussed more in columns,
especially with additional local context of what it actually costs in
BC/Vancouver, which is apparently close to the highest in the country. So
many stories shoot out of it (oppressive live-in caregiver program and all
its dimensions: racism, migrant work, immigration, racialized mothers
separated from their own kids to mother white women's kids, the outsourcing
of 'housewive' duties to other women by privileged women in the west, etc.
etc).
just a first initial thought!
