[Wamvan] Q this morning

(.... late to the party).
Just wanted to say good on ya Jill. I heard the interview live and was
cringing the entire time. It was so poorly done on so many levels. The
impression I got was that they opted to speak with two black men as a way
to highlight African Americans' perspectives on this debacle, since the
Cosby Show was so revered for its portrayal of a black family (we could
totally rip that apart, but that's the argument).
Good idea in theory (forefront people of colour), but such an oversight two
have 3 dudes chatting in the end.
Beyond that really important stuff, it was also just a really pained
interview - kept repeating the same question over and over again, like they
had run out of ways to come at the topic and needed to fill time. I wonder
if this has anything to do with how shook up that show must be right now,
in the aftermath of Jian's violence (not excuses, but probably the
context). But as you say, it makes the error that much more tragically
ironic.
Also want to thank you for including a 'next time, call me or I can put you
in touch with good people' part of your letter - I've started thinking
that's a great proactive way to invite producers to seek out different
voices and sources - they can no longer say they don't know people who fit
the bill. Good strategy!
Tami's right - we would hope folks like Wab would know better, but an
intersectional critical awareness isn't a given.
I hope Wab gets continued support and empowerment to hone his skills (and
deepen that awareness!). Would be great for him to have a permanent and
prominent presence on a major broadcaster.
