Hi all,

Whatever value we seek to draw from
new study on violence against women in Southeast Asian countries, by UN Joint Programme Partners for Prevention is neutralized due to the colonial white supremacist lens that inevitably this research will be viewed through. The racialization of violence against women and men who perpetrate violence against women is as resistant to change as is racism in and of itself.

The particular othering the men who participated in this research serves to reinforce the stratification and these oppressive frames.
We simply cannot discuss the issue of male violence against women without putting it in the context of white supremacy, colonialism and imperialism. This research appears lacks this very important context. So we end up with the same old conclusions being drawn.
And since it appears that the researchers are not from the communities, lands, territories, countries being analyzed we are unable to assess the particular historic legal social realities for the men who participated in the research to understand how masculinity was shaped and formed sexism, misogyny the use of violence sexism within the relationship women.

At the moment it appears that the only research that is being conducted about male violence against women that reaches the mainstream is with men of colour.

I imagine some members of our listserv may attend as audience members who may engage in dialogue with panelists, and Anisa who's kept us informed on this thread works at the UBC Sexual Assault Centre.

Are WAMmers already in progress with this idea? If yes, would you be interested in participation from BC Humanist Association? Many of our members have strong articulate opinions on the Sauder frosh incident and its connection to global sexism/misogyny.

Therefore, if we get rid of these chants, the problem is solved.
