Description:
Should journalists report the news objectively or from the heart? Is
objectivity the enemy of advocacy, or is it the other way around?
In our changing Canadian media landscape where the potential and
limitations of journalistic practice are constantly being redifned, it's
time to explore advocacy journalism, a genre of journalism that uses
traditional reporting tools to work for social change. This workshop will
explore the fundamentals of advocacy media as an instrument of change.
You will learn how to self publish, pitch stories to journalists and media
outlets, and advocate for stories that shake up the status quo.
Editors from Vancouver's leading alternative media will be in attendance
and you will have an opportunity to network with others in journalism.
No experience necessary! Just an interest in advocacy journalism.
Instructors for this session are:
Kevin Hollett, editor of Megaphone magazine
Derrick O'Keefe, previously the editor of rabble.ca, freelance journalist,
editor, and author of Michael Ignatieff: The Lesser Evil? and the co-writer
of Afghan MP Malalai Joya's political memoir, A Woman Among Warlords: The
Extraordinary Story of an Afghan Who Dared to Raise Her Voice.
Meghan Murphy of rabble.ca, freelance writer and journalist, and founder
and editor of Feminist Current.
The workshop will be moderated by Sacha DeVoretz.
* No Refunds on tickets purchased
