Hi everyone,
Who's going to Media Democracy Days
<http://mediademocracydays2013.ca/>today or tomorrow? It takes place
at the Vancouver public library (main
Georgia street branch) and entry is free although pre-registration is
recommended.
If you're there tomorrow (Saturday), look for Jarrah Hodge, WAM!Van member
and Gender Focus <http://www.gender-focus.com/> blogger extraordinaire.
She'll be woman-ing the WAM! Vancouver table and then speaking at the panel
below. Lend her a hand if you can!
At the table, we'll be talking about gender justice in the media,
signing people up for the listserv, recruiting new volunteers so we could
have more hands on deck to put on more frequent events, and promoting our
new website and blog.
Speaking of which, many thanks to Emily Yakashiro for her work as WAM!Van's
first house blogger. Her first post, on 4 books by Canadian women that
should be turned into movies (and the women who should direct them)
already becoming popular after just one day. Very exciting!
We'll use the blog (which is hosted on WAM!'s traffic-heavy website) to
showcase Canadian feminist media analysis. Subjects could cover anything
media-related, from our chapter members' unique perspectives.
Anyone is welcome to contribute or suggest blog post topics, and we can
also cross-post your previously published blogs. Please let us know if you
have any ideas! You can reach Emily at emily at theclosetfeminist.ca. Thanks
Emily!
Jarrah's panel info below:
PRODUCING SHAME: SEXUALITY, VISIBILITY, AND CYBERBULLYING
In the past year, several high-profile cases of “cyber-bullying” have
captured the attention of the public. Much has been made of the role online
social media played in these stories, while discussions of gender,
misogyny, and homophobia have been absent. Thus, this panel will explore
how “cyber-bullying” has uniquely affected young women and queer youth.
All the best,
Joanna
