[Wamvan] Introductions?

Hi all,

Wow - so many interesting women!

My name is Jill Goldberg, and I'm a college prof. of English Lit as well as a writer and sometime photographer. I've been living in Vancouver for just a few years - came here from Montréal - and I've been teaching at Langara College. In one of my classes I teach a unit on feminism, and this includes learning to analyse visual media based on feminist theory and semiotics. It's challenging for my students, but one of my favourite things to do.

I write for Tikkun Magazine (tikkun.org) and serve on their editorial board, and I also write for SubTerrain Magazine, and whoever else will take my work. I also was recently accepted into UBC's MFA in creative writing for next fall.

My feminist work has included volunteering at a couple of different shelters, but more recently I ran a couple of different programs out of WISH Drop-In Centre and EWMA. For quite a while I ran a program where, with a bunch of other volunteers, I provided massage (I'm also a shiatsu therapist) to the women at WISH. Eventually this morphed into me teaching a photography class there that culminated in an exhibit of the women's work at the Carnegie Community Centre. More recently I taught photography at EWMA, though at the moment I'm giving all that a bit of a rest while I work on other projects.

I'm pretty excited to have run into WAM and look forward to more projects big and small. I'd love to get in on the media literacy workshop...

See you all soon!

Jill

p.s. here's a recent article I wrote for Tikkun that some of you might find interesting. It's about a local writer Juliane Okot Bitek:

Hi, all!
I've been on the listserv for a while but haven't met most of you. I'm a digital media strategist, communicator, connector and writer. I love seeing the WAMVan discussions and event announcements in my inbox though I rarely participate.
I'm interested in systems change, community engagement and grassroots movement building. I like to ride my bike.
I'm currently marketing director at Modo The Car Co-op and digital strategist/community manager for documentary-transmedia project Fractured Land. I co-founded a women in media group called Girl Gang, which is how I came to learn about WAMVan (holla, Joanna!).
I encourage any women working in or with an interest in media to check us out: www.facebook.com/home.php?sk=group_102507519832961&ap=1.
Here's our About on FB:
A Vancouver collective of women working and/or interested in media. Through our meetups and FB group, we share information, resources, collaboration opportunities, personal projects and support.

Each member is encouraged to access and utilize the Girl Gang platform in whatever way serves her.

Want to host an event? hold a workshop? start a magazine? spark a revolution? Do it. Post on the Girl Gang wall or through the social media channels and find collaborators who can help.

Collective Twitter: @girlgangmedia
Collective Tumblr: girlgangmedia.tumblr.com

Any members may post and/or administer the Twitter and Tumblr; contact Hilary Henegar for passwords.

To gain admin status for the FB - in order to create a GG event page - post to the Girl Gang group page and tag Hilary Henegar & Alexandra Samur (co-founders).
Looking forward to seeing contributions from new members.

Peace!Hilary

Hi everyone,

It's been neat to read people's intros. Looking forward to hopefully meeting more of you in person at the next Monday Media Mutiny! Dom - I think that's a great idea. I've never done anything through Trade School but it looks neat. Would love to talk more with folks about how something like that could work.

So about me: I'm originally from the Island and moved down to Vancouver when I started university. I did my BA at UBC in Women's Studies and Sociology and after that lucked out to get to work for some amazing feminist women MPs - Penny Priddy and Dawn Black - and MLA Jenn McGinn. When Jenn lost her seat in the 2009 election I was laid off and started my blog, Gender Focus (http://gender-focus.com). Since that time I've been running and editing GF, which is a Canadian multi-author feminist blog dealing with issues from pop culture to media literacy to politics to grassroots issues campaigns.

I've also written for the Huffington Post, the Vancouver Observer, Bitch Magazine Blogs, and About-Face. I sit on the City of Vancouver Women's Advisory Committee. And I'm working on the next bunch of my "Feminism F.A.Q.s" videos, designed to give very 101-type info to people who are just learning about feminism (http://www.gender-focus.com/feminism-f-a-q-s/).

Oh, and my actual job is at the Canadian Office and Professional Employees Union, Local 378 (COPE 378), where I work as a Communications Representative.

Cheers!

Jarrah

Hello Everybody! My name is Dom and I came
across WAM, while online looking for the Women, Art and Revolution
documentary. I’m an art historian
interested in all things related to images and gender. I’m also interested in participating in
activism around media literacy from a feminist point of view. It is very heartening to see that there
is such a group in Vancouver and I hope to contribute to it any way I can.
Monday night was fantastic- can’t wait for the next event! One of the things I’ve been thinking about
lately is creating a feminist media literacy workshop and offering it through
the trade school. Having just watched Candace’s video, and Jarrah’s FAQ videos,
I wonder if some (or all members) of WAM might be interested in developing
something in this manner. http://tradeschool.coop/Vancouver/class Cheers!

Dom
