[Wamvan] Introductions?

Hello Everybody! My name is Dom and I came
across WAM, while online looking for the Women, Art and Revolution
documentary.  I’m an art historian
interested in all things related to images and gender.  I’m also interested in participating in
activism around media literacy from a feminist point of view.  It is very heartening to see that there
is such a group in Vancouver and I hope to contribute to it any way I can.
Monday night was fantastic- can’t wait for the next event!

One of the things I’ve been thinking about
lately is creating a feminist media literacy workshop and offering it through
the trade school. Having just watched Candace’s video, and Jarrah’s FAQ videos,
I wonder if some (or all members) of WAM might be interested in developing
something in this manner.

Cheers!

Hi everyone! My name is Candace Coulson, I was introduced to WAM!Van at SFPIRG (Simon Fraser Public Interest Research Group) last fall when I was looking for a project to do to make a directed studies course out of at SFU. I ended up doing a small project for Wam!Van and produced a research paper and catalogue on Canadian Blogs of Feminist Interest (don't worry, this will be released soon and I am sure you guys will all be informed about it).

Anways, my interest in feminism began when I started working in the visual presentation department for a corporate head office in Montreal about 8 years ago. The sexism wreaked in every business meeting and office space in that building. It didn't help that it was a fashion retail environment...this is where the ugly side of the fashion industry really became magnified for me and I realized how much women's bodies are used to sell products, and moreover, what certain images say about what it means to be a woman or man in our society. Investigating and contemplating this has really become a hobby of mine and a bit of an academic pursuit since.

I am studying to become an elementary school teacher, as I love working with children because they are so authentic/honest, and I believe that youngsters should be aware of social justice issues. I also want to help boost children's confidence and be apart of their exploration of developing interests and hobbies at a young age, so that they don't become victims of the popular cultures projection of gender roles stereotypes (as I once was) and that they hopefully reduce substance abuse and delinquency due to boredom and lack of direction/confidence. I am also intrested in projects that include building critical media literacy skills and talking about body image issues with children/adolescents. If you are interested, check out this short video I did on gender role stereotypes and advertising: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=M-3VSzOkQ34

Wow, I didn't realize I had so much to say...to conclude, I'd love to start coming to the WAM!Van Monday meetings once this semester is over, because unfortunately I have class at that time.

Well that's it for now!

Have a great day, Candace :+)

Hi, I'm Lyn, a Vancouver feminist, former high school teacher, freelance journalist and currently, English tutor. I also write a column for Herizons (Hi Joanna!). As an avid media watcher who is disgusted by the continuing sexism in newspapers, TV and on the Internet, I'm glad to join WAM - feels less lonely out here. I hope to attend an event soon and meet some of you.

Hey, I'm not sure how to reply all or respond entirely on this, but here's my introduction. We'll see if it works.
Hi, I'm Megan. I was born in Winnipeg, raised in Calgary and I'm now living in Vancouver for my 4th year. If I head any further West I'll run out of land pretty soon! I'm just finishing up my B.A. at UBC, majoring in Political Science and GRSJ (Gender, Race, Sexuality and Social Justice, the new name for their Women's and Gender Studies department). I've been interested in media, women, body image and feminism for a long time, although university and volunteering opportunities have really broadened my interests. I currently volunteer with the youth social justice education organization Check Your Head and act as co-editor-in-chief for Ignite, which is GRSJ's undergraduate journal. I'm looking ahead to see how I can keep bringing writing, education, feminism and media together as I graduate. I've been lurking on this list since the first WAM! Vancouver conference and I have been meaning to get out to events since then, if you can believe it, but nothing
has worked out with my schedule. After graduation, I'm hoping my schedule becomes a little more flexible and I can make it out to the Monday night events.

So, that's me! Hello everyone!

Hello! We've had some new members join the listserv this week. Welcome!

I was wondering whether all members old and new would consider replying to this thread with a quick note introducing yourselves. That way, we can all have an idea of who each other are, since different people show up to different social events, and some members live outside of Vancouver. You can just copy and paste the info that you used in the original listserv application if you'd like.

I'll start.

Hi, I'm Joanna. I'm a journalist and a co-organizer of the WAM! Vancouver chapter, along with Natalie Hill and Elyse Jacobson. I gathered people together to start the Vancouver chapter in early 2011 after moving back to the city from New York, where there was an existing NYC chapter. We launched WAM!Van with a conference in March 2011. It was hard work, but a lot of fun!

I used to work and volunteer in the NGO world, focusing on gender equality issues. I've since worked to combine my interest in human rights advocacy and feminism with work in journalism and media criticism. I think it's because I'm more introverted and like to stay home in my pajamas to write. I'm a columnist for Herizons, a national Canadian feminist magazine. I'm currently living in Hong Kong as a reporter for South China Morning Post focusing on social issues and legal affairs. My work is flexible, so I can do a lot of traveling. In addition to doing reporting in China and other parts of Asia this year, I hope to spend good chunks of time back home in Vancouver. I'll be back next sometime in the summer.

Thanks!

Joanna
