Hello! We've had some new members join the listserv this week. Welcome!
I was wondering whether all members old and new would consider replying to
this thread with a quick note introducing yourselves. That way, we can all
have an idea of who each other are, since different people show up to
different social events, and some members live outside of Vancouver. You
can just copy and paste the info that you used in the original listserv
application if you'd like.
I'll start.
Hi, I'm Joanna. I'm a journalist and a co-organizer of the WAM! Vancouver
chapter, along with Natalie Hill and Elyse Jacobson. I gathered people
together to start the Vancouver chapter in early 2011 after moving back to
the city from New York, where there was an existing NYC chapter. We
launched WAM!Van with a conference in March 2011. It was hard work, but a
lot of fun!
I used to work and volunteer in the NGO world, focusing on gender equality
issues. I've since worked to combine my interest in human rights advocacy
and feminism with work in journalism and media criticism. I think it's
because I'm more introverted and like to stay home in my pajamas to write.
I'm a columnist for Herizons, a national Canadian feminist magazine. I'm
currently living in Hong Kong as a reporter for South China Morning Post
focusing on social issues and legal affairs. My work is flexible, so I can
do a lot of traveling. In addition to doing reporting in China and other
parts of Asia this year, I hope to spend good chunks of time back home in
Vancouver. I'll be back next sometime in the summer.
Thanks!
Joanna
