Hello everyone!

Well, I think it's safe to say our first Media Mutiny Monday event was a
great success! There was a hiccup or two - like, uh, choosing a venue that
is regularly CLOSED on Mondays (ugh!) - but for the most part I think
everyone who came out had a great time :)

As for the venue - once again, sincerest apologies to all. I was personally
responsible for booking the venue. I didn't do my due diligence. I'm
sincerely sorry if anyone missed the event or did not feel comfortable
attending because of the confusion in the hours beforehand. I hope this
will not keep anyone away in the future. Again, huge thanks for Jarrah for
notifying me of the issue, and securing us some tables at Our Town instead.
I'm so sorry for the mistake.

On that note - please, stay tuned: *we will be announcing a new venue for
these events,* once one is found (and thoroughly checked out!).

As for the first event, here's what went down!

   - Seven rad individuals turned up for DIY sticker making - awesome to
   have met you all!
   - A collection of wicked awesome stickers were made - check out the
   photos here.<http://www.facebook.com/media/set/?set=a.544628008890465.126570.222842817735654&type=1&l=c4e47ba918>
   - Stickers expressed everything from your basic anti-patriarchy
messages, to stats about media literacy and the impact of sexist media on
young girls, to resisting rape culture, to flow charts that explain the
connection between imagery and 'real life' treatment of women.
Some were funny, some were serious - all were awesome.

We also had plenty to talk about! Here's an overview of the rad topics that
came up:

   - A sense that Vancouver lacks a strong sense of community, and
difficult finding feminist groups to get involved with
   - The problem of systemic sexism within the humanist/atheist community
and recent 'scandals' (aka: incidents in which this sexist culture has been
challenged, and the subsequent backlash from the men in power), such as what
   happened to Rebecca
Watson<http://www.slate.com/articles/double_x/doublex/2012/10/sexism_in_the_skeptic_community_i_spoke_out_then_came_the_rape_threats.html>
   - Jarrah's recent appearances as an expert feminist commentator in the
mainstream media, and what she sees as an interesting turn - more and more
women producers interested in getting feminist opinions included (and the
irony of them complaining: "no one in the media is talking about this!"
when they are the ones who can affect change)
   - The connection between sports culture and violence against women;
recent media coverage of this issue that actually explored the root causes
   (patriarchy! ding ding ding!)
   - Art history in academia and the ways art history can be explored in
everyday culture, from a feminist lens (also: feminist fand feminist views
getting pushed out of the academy)
   - Frieda's amazing adventures as a feminist organizer and reporter
   (she's been everywhere!)
   - and much, much more

Sticker-makers: if you would like the picture I took of you, email me at
nhill10 at gmail.com. Unfortunately this listserv is unable to allow me to
attach all them (even low res versions) in this message.

Everyone: Feel free to comment and offer suggestions as to what you'd like
to see at a Media Mutiny Monday event. We'll be in touch soon with the plan
for the next event: *mark your calendars for February 18th!*

See you then,

Natalie
