Hi all,
I did a little research to see if there are already events planned for Feb. 14's One Billion Rising event, and I found one that is planned for 10 am at Main and Terminal. The organizers of this one plan to join up with the women's memorial march after they're done rising. I won't be able to attend because I'll be at work, but, my thought right now is that perhaps rather than replicate their event, we should join them!
Here's the link to the Rising event that's already planned: http://onebillionrising.org/page/event/detail/startarising/wlq
What do you all think?

"The drum is the heartbeat..."
– Tsawaysia Spukwus, Squamish elder
Fractured Land follows Caleb Behn, whom The Globe and Mail calls "one of B.C.’s bright, emerging native political leaders," as he explores the complex issues surrounding development in the northeast gas patch.
By supporting our crowdsourced fundraising drive, you can experience the traditional teachings of First Nations culture, from drummaking to foraging – a cultural heritage threatened by inadequate regulation of industrial development.
We spoke with Alice Guss (Tsawaysia Spukwus) who has 15+ years experience hosting drummaking workshops, like the one we're offering to funders at the $300 level. Find an excerpt below.
What is the role of the drum in Squamish culture and ceremony?
Alice: The drum is the heartbeat – the hearbeat of our mind, body and spirit. Drumming connects people and brings them together.
We take light from the deer, and we take light from the cedar, and these are sacred to our people. Every time you make a drum, it is not made to hang on a wall. Every time you bang a drum you are keeping the spirit of that deer and that tree alive. In a ceremony, the beat brings people together – one body, one mind, one spirit. We are one.
What can Fractured Land funders expect at your drummaking workshop?
To begin, I do protocol. We sit in a welcome circle, which represents the sacred circle, and share a Squamish song. An eagle feather is passed around, and I ask everyone to introduce themselves and explain who they are, where they are from and what their roots are. I then offer instructions on how to make the drums – and sing, drum and tell stories while everyone is working. At the end, we close with a song and everyone shares their experience.
... The skin of the drum is made from deerskin and the frame and rim from maple trees or cedar. At each workshop, we transform a gift from the earth into another gift. ...
What energy you put into the drum is the outcome of what it will be. ...
