[Wamvan] Mark your calendars - Monday Media MUTINNNNY! January 21

Hi Everyone,

Just  a quick question: I recently sent an email to Marlene George of the Women's Memorial March to ask her about One Billion Rising, and she emailed me back saying that someone from my organization will be attending their meeting this Thurs.  I'm not sure if she meant someone from WAM?  Is someone going to that meeting from WAM, or is there already someone planning a one billion rising with them?  If anyone knows, please let me know!

Here are the minutes from our December Rhizome social, where we discussed the action items that Natalie summarized in her first email. If you attended the social and volunteered to take on a task, the tasks are noted in the minutes. 

Let us know if you have any questions, and please keep sending more of your ideas for discussion on the listserv! Each MEDIA MUTINY gathering will focus on taking a concrete action, but there'll be plenty of social time to chat about other action ideas and to discuss all kinds of media + feminism topics as well! 

ACTION IDEAS: 
1) Idea from Rebecca-To organize 
petition or campaign against local restaurants using sexist advertising,
 such as the Shark Club 

Group feedback: To use one of the monthly meetings 
to discuss problems with advertising in general in Vancouver, such as 
presentation of sex-related ads at the back of the Georgia Straight, and
 to share ideas on how to effectively write letters to the editors and 
op-eds. Jennifer shared anecdote of how she wrote letters to Lululemon 
about a misogynist song they included on their website's playlist, and 
successfully got them to apologize and take down the song. 

Action: Organizers will arrange a meeting to go over advertising, op-eds and letters to the editor 
2)
 Idea from Jill: Organize a flash mob dance on Feb. 14, as part of "One 
Billion Rising Campaign." (campaign on violence against women: http://onebillionrising.org/) 

Group feedback: Likes idea as example of easy action
 to accomplish, but should contact annual DTES Memorial March for 
Missing and Murdered Women organizers to make sure they're okay with it,
 and then to decide where to hold the flash mob. 

Action: Jill will contact Memorial March organizers to discuss, and if ok, Jill will help coordinate flash mob 
3) Idea from Jana G (via email): Organizing a Women's Day event (Friday, March 8) 

Group feedback: Ok to think of a small event to 
hold, but important to help promote Women's Day events already organized
 by other local groups because they don't get enough public support. 

Action: WAM!Van organizers will compile list and post on WAM!Can website to share via social media 
Possible Action: Create a poster of events to distribute 

4) Idea from Candace-Organize and facilitate media literacy workshops for youth
Group
 feedback: Had discussion about gender stereotypes in media, work of 
Laura Mulvey and Jean Kilbourne, agreed that important work WAM!
 can do is promote media literacy among youth. Agreed that this is a 
longer term project. Might be able to do something small around WAM! It Yourself week. Attendees said that because WIY week falls around Easter and end of college semester, people will be busy. 

Action: Candace will speak with Jill to brainstorm ideas on workshop; Organizers will discuss whether to hold event on WIY week.
5) Idea from Alia: Create book about personal stories about gender and the media (all topics covered by WAM!)

Group feedback: Discussed which format book could take (online series, zine, actual printed book?) Would WAM!Can
 website support a platform for this project? How would we go about 
collecting and editing stories? Concern about resources and time needed 
for project. 

Action: Ask Jaclyn about WAM! Can website and options to present stories; find editor(s) willing to take on this project 
6)
 Idea from Jarrah: Provide watchdogging and media advisories about 
sexist coverage of female politicians during upcoming election in BC

Group feedback: Really liked idea of issuing a media
 advisory beforehand to local media so we're proactive so we're not just
 reacting to sexist coverage. Advisory will point out what to avoid 
doing, and how to not hold female politicians to different standards. 
Discussed people calling Christy Clark a MILK. Discussed whether to use 
illustration satirically making fun of Stephen Harper's hairstyle and 
clothes. 

Action: Will plan an upcoming monthly meeting to create media advisory and decide how to play watchdog role 
7)
 Idea from Frieda: Support more women filmmakers, and films with 
feminist relevance. Should contact VIFF to thank them for having a 
feature on women's films. 

Group feedback: Would be great and easy to organize more socials for WAM! members and others to watch films during film festivals, such as VIFF. 
Action:
 Will keep track of film showings in Vancouver and organize socials to 
watch them together. Assign someone to contact VIFF and other festival 
organizers. 

8) Idea from Alia: Use website to show gratitude for
 media, companies and organizations doing good work on advancing justice
 in the media; a girlcott (opposite of boycott) 
Group feedback: Liked idea of recognizing positive actions in community

Action: Publicize project among WAM! community and devote section on WAM! Vancouver website to thank organizations 
9) Idea from Jarrah: Mimic "About Face" body image campaign where they put "You're beautiful" stickers on objectifying ads, store changerooms, etc. 

Group feedback: Would be fun for members to do 
around city; make sure stickers can be pulled off so we're not 
vandalizing. Can have other phrases, like "I was photoshopped"

Action: Organizers look into how to make stickers; see if we 
can organize a monthly meeting to create stickers with different 
phrases 
10) Other potential targets for actions: MRAs and Fresh magazine (magazine that heavily promotes plastic surgery) 

Actions: Think more about what to do about MRAs 
(discussion didn't lead to concrete actions, because unsure about 
whether recognizing them would be doing them a service). Look into who 
publishes Fresh magazine. Consider doing a satirical version of the 
magazine.

I'd kind of like to keep it on a consistent day for now, unless there are a sizable number of interested people who can't make Monday nights. It'll be easier for everyone to remember when it's happening if it's on the same day every month.

A few people have also suggested alternating meetings with the third Wednesday of the month. Do people think that would work?

At the WAM! social in December, Joanna introduced the idea of the WAM! Van community getting together on a regular basis to do small-ish, easy to implement resistance-based actions. 

I've been told everyone at the social had tons of great ideas.* We loved all of them!

While we work on ways to make those ideas happen, we (the few WAM! core members) wanted to offer something right away; 

a way for us to get together, take action, and at the same time, conspire ways to make all these other ideas get the momentum they need to take off.

MONDAY MEDIA MUTINY!!!every third monday of the month (january 21, feb 18, march 18, etc..)

(we are open to doing it on different days! let us know if non-mondays work better for you)7-9PM ish

cool DIY feminist action related actMMM #1 - JANUARY 21:

DIY RAD FEMINIST STICKER MAKING EXTRAVANGANZA!!

we will supply the sticker-making stuffbring your emotions (rage, glee, anything in between), your ideas, 

and any other supplies you may wish to cut up and incorporate into a DIY sticker (old magazines, for example, may interest some people)we will all get together and make stickers with whatever messages we want on them, and then go out into the world and stick away!

You can make generic anti-sexist stickers to put on bus shelter ads, specific stickers to put on A-frames outside specific stores (cough*AmericanApparel*cough*), 

stickers aimed at curbing fatphobia, or anything in between. Whatever sticker you wanna make, we wanna help you do it.

Mark your calendars - the first Monday Media Mutiny event is 2 weeks from today, January 21. Reminder to come!
