[Wamvan] UPRISING: Finalized Conference Agenda, Speakers List

We're almost there! WAM!'s 2nd annual conference, UPRISING, is now just
days away.  The core organizing team is happy to be able to share the
finalized agenda and speakers list (attached, and copied below).


Please make sure to register (
wamvancouver.wordpress.com/conferenceregistration). This is especially
important for the purposes of planning catering, travel stipends and
childcare.**

*WAM! Vancouver’s 2nd Annual Community Conference*

Saturday, March 31st, 10am-4pm

The Centre for Peace – 1825 West 16th Avenue

*Note: All programming will be held in the main hall at the Centre for
Peace, except for the interactive artists’ workshop, which will be held
upstairs in the small meeting room.*

**Arrival – 9:45-10am*
*Enjoy a hot cup of coffee or tea and visit with fellow WAM!mers before the
conference kicks off.
*
*Welcome – 10-10:30am*
*Members of the WAM! Core organizing team will welcome you all to the
conference and facilitate a brief discussion on the politics of holding the
event in this space, on unceded Coast Salish territories.  We will go over
WAM! values and our guidelines for creating safer space, which we will be
upholding throughout the day.* *We will provide a brief overview of WAM! as
an organization, and the objectives of our conference.

*Beginning of Panels and Workshops**
*
*Square Off: Tahrir to Robson – 10:30am-12pm*
*WAM! moderators will facilitate a discussion on the representation of the
Arab Spring and Occupy movements.
*
Speakers include:
*Mohamed Algarf* – Editor in Chief of UBC Perspectives Magazine, Columnist
for Schema Magazine, UBC Master of Journalism student
*Miranda Nelson* – Assistant Editor of straight.com (The Georgia Straight
online)
*Kate Milberry* – Expert in online privacy, social movements and the
Internet
*Tami Starlight* – Local activist, participant in Occupy Vancouver, and
co-creator of its anti-oppression committee

 *Lunch – 12-1pm*
*During lunch, we invite participants to network with various independent,
feminist or feminist-friendly media outlets who are invited to ‘table’ at
our event.*

*Let’s Talk SlutWalk – 1-2:30pm*
*WAM! moderators will facilitate a discussion around the representation of
SlutWalk and its critiques.*

Speakers include:
*Natasha Sanders-Kay *– Organizer, Vancouver SlutWalk
*Meghan Murphy* – Host of The F-Word, blogger and editor of feminisms.org
*Jen Sung* – Vancouver queer rights advocate
*Angela Marie MacDougall* - Battered Women’s Support Services

*7 Habits of Highly Effective Feminists: Revolution Edition – 2:30-3:30pm*
*Conference participants will be guided through this popular workshop
(first delivered at the 2011 F-Word Conference), updated to cater
specifically of feminists’ experiences of participating in social movements
and uprisings.*

*Workshop leader: Meenakshi Mannoe*, WAM! Core organizer

*Inspiring Insurrection: Creating revolutionary art – 2:30-3:30pm**
**Note: This workshop will be held upstairs, not in the main gathering
space.*
*This workshop invites artists of various of kinds – visual artists,
musicians, filmmakers, poets, and more – to come together to discuss the
process of making political art. Attendees will have the opportunity to
discuss their particular approaches to making media that captures, or
inspires, political uprisings.
*
Workshop leaders:
*Elle-Maija Tailfeathers* – Indigenous filmmaker and actress
*Lau Mehes and Emily Griffith* – Political playwrights
*Haisla** Collins* – Indigenous visual artist
*Elyse Jacobson* – Violinist, songwriter, member of *The Living*, WAM! Core
organizer

*Wrap-up – 3:30-4pm*
*All attendees will reconvene in the main hall to debrief from the
discussions of the day, provide us with your thoughtful feedback of the
event, and brainstorm ways to stay connected as a network of activists,
feminists, journalists and media critics. Sharing of appreciations for
individual contributions to the event.*
