nominees for our Board of Directors. The board is responsible for providing

*Poetry for the People: Vancouver Redux
Theme: The Close Reading - Finding the Spirits in the Poem*

A salon series that explores voice, reading and craft in poetry rooted
within / emerging out of grassroots communities and communities of
struggle. Featured poets and salon facilitators include Lee Maracle, Hari
Alluri, Dalannah Gail Bowen, Nadia Chaney, Mercedes Eng and Rita Wong. Also
featuring performances by Obediya Jones-Darrell, Claire Wilson & Mohamed
Assani. We welcome all lovers and practitioners of poetry, but especially
encourage participation by Indigenous poets and poets of colour. To

Fat Happiness Day is a chance for members of the SFU community to gather
together for a facilitated discussion about the politics of fat and body
size diversity. Bring your fat happiness - and yes, also your struggle and
pain around this issue - and join us in the SFPIRG lounge. This event is
co-sponsored by Fat Panic! Vancouver - an alliance of people of all sizes
who are committed to ending the oppression of fat people, and to working
towards a society in which no one is taught to hate their own or anyone
else’s body, for any reason. There will be cupcakes!

The Vancouver stop of the WE Canada cross-country tour, Dialogue and Action
for Earth Summit 2012, will focus on the empowerment of civil society by
offering an analysis of current trends in sustainable development through
dialogue and discussion to ensure Canadian civil society representation on
the global scale at the Earth Summit 2012. The event will also feature a
talk by Aleksandra Nasteska, co-founder of We Canada.

Dr. David Schindler, chairman of the Safe Drinking Water Foundation and

Public Lecture: Dr. Anna Zalik, Faculty of Environmental Studies, York
University*

This presentation examines recent controversies surrounding Canadian oil,
gas and mining industries here, in Latin America and West Africa. What are
the implications of such industrial activity for the erosion of democracy?
Anna Zalik is Associate Professor in the Faculty of Environmental Studies
at York University. Her work has examined corporate strategy through the
merging of industrial security practice with social development
interventions in strategic oil and gas exporters. Over the past decade she
has conducted extended fieldwork in Canada, Mexico and Nigeria on this
topic.
