Nasrin Sotoudeh:
Imprisoned in Iran for her work on women's rights

Every year on International Women's Day, Amnesty International members
celebrate achievements in women's human rights and campaign on some of the
most pressing issues facing women.

Please join us this year as we support women in the Middle East and North
Africa, who are raising their voices in the midst of political turbulence
and violent repression to express their vision for peaceful and democratic
change.

Here are three ways you can get involved:

Zarganar, Myanmar's most famous comedian, visits Amnesty International
"You saved my life! Thank you!"

"You saved my life! Thank you"

Two years ago, the wrongful imprisonment of Zarganar motivated Amnesty
International members to write for his freedom. A popular comedian, film
actor and director in Myanmar, Zarganar was sentenced to 35 years in prison
for exercising his freedom of speech, and had served 11 years in prison,
including five in solitary confinement. Last fall, Zarganar was released,
along with over 100 other political prisoners. During a special visit to
Canada last week, this remarkable man said "thank you" and shared his
perspectives on human rights in Myanmar. Read

countries wrote over one million letters!

But more important than the phenomenal level of participation are the
results we're already seeing: Jabbar Savalan has been released.

Success: Canadian acquited in Bahrain

Naser al-Raas acquitted in Bahrain

I would like to thank Amnesty International, Amnesty International Canada
and the people of Canada and all Amnesty members for fighting for me. I’d
like to thank everyone who fought for me without knowing me. I now believe
in those who fight for justice. Thank you so much.
- Naser al-Raas, upon his release

Naser al-Raas, a Canadian national of Kuwaiti origin, had been sentenced to
five years in prison for "inciting hatred towards the regime",
participating in illegal gatherings and giving false information to the
media. On February 16, he was found not guilty of all charges in his appeal
verdict!

Amnesty International welcomes this decision as a victory for freedom of
expression, association and assembly, and for the defence of Naser's right
to be free from torture and ill-treatment. Read
