SFU’s Muslim Students Hope to Raise Awareness About Islam

March 1, 2012 (BURNABY): Muslim students at Simon Fraser University are gearing up to host their upcoming annual Islam Awareness Week. 

>From March 5 - March 9, 2012, SFU’s Muslim Students Association (SFU-MSA) will be holding a variety of events throughout the week to raise awareness of Islamic principles and to combat misconceptions commonly held about the faith. “The media, politicians, and governments worldwide have painted Islam as a barbaric, terroristic, and militant religion”, says one SFU student. “It’s now up to us as free-thinking individuals to come up with our own judgments that are independent of these agents”. 

The many events lined-up for Islam Awareness Week include: audience-tailored discussion panels featuring prominent scholars in the local Vancouver Muslim community, film screenings of the documentaries “Koran By Heart” and “The Fog is Lifting”, a Meet & Greet social to encourage open dialogue amongst Muslims and non-Muslims, and Muslim female reverts sharing their experiences on how Islam has empowered them. The final day of the weeklong event will end off with a public Jama’ah (Friday prayer) and the main keynote event with Dr. Syed Ibn Iqbal to broaden the public’s intercultural perspectives by developing an understanding of the Islamic faith socially and academically.
