[Wamvan] Fwd: [CFRO programmers] Job Posting: Public Affairs Co-ordinator

Sorry for any confusion! I sent out the media coop article and referred people to the comments to illustrate the kind of hostility I was referring to. I also sent out the article from the Rape Relief website that thanked Vancouver co-op radio among many other organizations for their support. Perhaps VRR was only referring to the F-Word radio show there.

I understand that all this could be pretty confusing for those on the listserv who might not be active in the vancouver feminist community!

If you're at all involved in the Vancouver feminist community, the divisions and hostility are pretty darn obvious, and people from all sides of the various arguments are a part of the problems. And I've seen these problems turn people off from getting involved in feminist spaces at all, which is scary.

I have nothing against the F-Word radio show, but I do understand how their recent program framing "transgenderism and feminism" as an issue for debate could be very triggering for folks from the trans community. And it may have been irresponsible to post the potentially highly triggering transcription of Jeffery's part of the program when the show itself was more balanced.

Tami, I think you're very courageous for making sure your voice is heard when you see oppressive dynamics at play. But just to clarify, do you have any criticisms against Vancouver co-op radio as a whole? I think that sometimes, your brief emails are a little confusing, and I would personally benefit a lot from hearing more of what you have to say.

> Joanna - I'm quite sure this does not have anything to do with Rape Relief. Also, the original email I sent was a job posting for Vancouver Co-op Radio, which is an entirely different organization than Vancouver Media Co-op (which published the article about intervening at the Rape Relief event).

> As Tami clarified with her follow up email, she is angered at the fact that the F-Word Radio Show, one of Vancouver Co-op Radio's 70+ weekly programs, did an interview with someone who may be interpreted as trans-phobic (Sheila Jeffreys).
>
> I would like to add that the interview with which she is taking offense was a part of 2-hour long program about transgenderism and feminism, which also included an interview with transgender activist Susan Stryker, who is the Director at the Institute for LGBT Studies and Associate Professor in Gender and Women’s Studies at the University of Arizona, as well as a discussion on women-only spaces and trans inclusion in recreational sports with Barb Besharat of The 519 Church Street Community Centre in Toronto.

> And as far as ideas on how to improve the level of dialogue in the Vancouver feminist community, my answer would be for individuals to treat each other with a modicum of respect, abide by safer space guidelines as laid out clearly on this listserv (and anywhere else, for that matter) and refrain from making inflammatory statements about any person or institution that is by some degree connected to someone who may not hold the same political views as them.
