   Hi Tami,

We kicked off the 10th Annual Hope in Shadows photography contest last week
at the Pivot office, Downtown Eastside Women's Centre, VANDU and Carnegie
as we distributed more than 200 contest
<http://pivotlegal.us1.list-manage1.com/track/click?u=9a451e878eeec0a3e584da1a3&id=efb0ae0507&e=0de74ccece>
cameras.

Some of the participants are likely out snapping photos as I write this
email to you. They've been asked to reflect this year's contest theme -
What I value about my Downtown Eastside community - back to us through
their images.

To get the participants thinking about the contest theme we posted big
sheets of paper on our garage door and had people write or draw what was
important to them about their low-income community. There are some photos
of this and other highlights of the camera handout on
Flickr<http://pivotlegal.us1.list-manage1.com/track/click?u=9a451e878eeec0a3e584da1a3&id=15a936d46d&e=0de74ccece>.
We had lots of amazing volunteers on hand to pull off the event (including
volunteers from some of our sponsors - notably Vancity and Salt Spring
Coffee). Kristina Mansveld - a summer intern at Pivot - shared her
reflections on the camera handout on the Pivot blog. Read her first hand
account here<http://pivotlegal.us1.list-manage.com/track/click?u=9a451e878eeec0a3e584da1a3&id=baa376e781&e=0de74ccece>
.

My reflections of the camera handout are many but there are a few things
that really stand out. One is how much excitement the contest generates
within the community. For participants this is an opportunity to share
their vision of the neighbourhood with a wider audience and to share
important stories about the people who call this place home. The
participants take this opportunity to heart. They want people to understand
what their Downtown Eastside community is all about.

This year's contest theme around values seemed to excite the participants.
At the smaller camera handouts at VANDU and the Downtown Eastside Women's
Centre we had conversations about community values. Those who picked up
cameras at the main handout didn't need any prompting to share their
thoughts about community values as they inscribed them on our garage door.
>From what I heard and observed it is clear that there are things about this
low-income community that its members deeply value. The Downtown Eastside
is a place where they feel accepted without judgment, it's a community that
cares for its members and in particular for people who are suffering, it's
a neighbourhood that fights for justice and people feel a strong affinity
to this place and to one another.

I can't wait to see what the participants capture on film this year, and
how they reflect their values using photographic techniques. We expect that
more than 3,500 images will be submitted at the camera return today. Later
in the month our panel of judges will help select the "Top 40" winning
images and top photos in the categories of "Best Portrait", "Best Urban
Landscape", "Best Colour", and "Best Black & White". Community members
themselves will select four winning photos in the category of "Downtown
Eastside Community Choice Award".

Please stay tuned as Hope in Shadows 2012-2013 unfolds throughout the
summer.
