Downtown Eastside Women’s Centre

Mental Health Advocate
Internal/External Posting (Full-Time Permanent)

Aboriginal Women and Women of Colour are Strongly Encouraged to Apply

The Downtown Eastside Women’s Centre is a drop-in Centre offering a wide
variety of services to a diverse community of women and children living in
the Downtown Eastside of Vancouver.

Primary Responsibilities:

Advocacy:  provide information, referral, and advocacy to women in the
areas of BC Benefits and income assistance, Residential Tenancy and
housing, and Ministry for Children and Families.

Outreach and Liaison:  establish and maintain contact with related agencies
and attend relevant meetings.

Education and Programming:  develop and facilitate educational workshops
and programming related to advocacy issues.

Resources and Administration:  develop and maintain resource files on
related advocacy issues.  Maintain statistics and activity reports as per
the funders reporting requirements.

Candidate must work from strong feminist analysis and within an
anti-oppression framework

Qualifications:
    Minimum 3 years related experience working with low-income women. 
Familiarity with and ability to interpret the BC Benefits Act & Regulations
& Residential Tenancy Act and the Child Family and Community Services Act.
    Excellent writing and research skills including the ability to write
tribunal/arbitration submissions.
    Familiarity with support services, agencies and community resources in
the Downtown Eastside.
    Record keeping, scheduling, and problem-solving abilities; strong
organizational skills
    Ability to work within a chaotic environment and with a diverse
community of women
    Ability to work independently and as a member of a staff collective

Position Details:     Full-time/Permanent
            Union Position:  BCGEU
