This call was structured and written for students, but it sounds like a job
that could (and should) be open to anyone who's interested.

*Volunteer interviewer position with Pivot Legal Society’s Hope in
Shadowsproject.
*

** **

*Hope in Shadows* is a community development project centered around an
annual photography contest. 200 residents of the Downtown Eastside are
given single-use cameras and have three days to capture images that
represent their community. Winning photos and stories related to the
photos are used to create a calendar that is then sold of the streets of
Vancouver by low-income people. This year, vendors sold 17,000 calendars. **
**

** **

The goals of the project are to provide an avenue for residents of the
Downtown Eastside to represent their community through their own eyes and
to share a different perspective on the neighbourhood with thebroader
community. Through the vendor program we also aim create opportunities for
positive interactions between Downtown Eastside residents and people
inother neighbourhoods and to provide skills-training and low-barrier
employment to people living in poverty.****

We are looking for a student with a social science background and an
interest in how photography and stories can be used for social change to
spend six weeks with Pivot Legal Society conducting interviews with
participants who have either taken one of the top forty photographs orwhose
image is in one of the photographs. ****

** **

This is a great opportunity for a fourth year student or graduate student
in sociology, anthropology, women’s studies or another social science
discipline. We are happy to work with faculty if a student is interested
in using this experience as the basis for a directed studies course or as
part of a thesis project. As well as building interviewing skills and
gaining experience working in a non-profit, the volunteer will be a part of
activities to mark * Hope in Shadows’* 10th anniversary and will
participate in Pivot’s campaign team meetings whenever possible. ****

*Volunteer will be expected to:*

** **

· work with project coordinator to developinterview template and to
outreach to interview subjects.****

· use Pivot’s best practices policy to inform interview participants
of the ways in which their image or story may be used and to ensure that
informed consent has been given.****

· conduct one-to-one (and in some cases small group) interviews with
winning photographers and photo subjects.****

· transcribe and synthesize interview content.****

· work with the project team to develop calendar write-ups and stories
for communications materials ****

** **

*Qualifications*

· Experience conducting qualitative interviews.****

· Excellent oral and written communications skills****

· Experience working with people who are living in poverty, people who
are criminalized and the Aboriginal communities is an asset. ****

· Some familiarity with the Downtown Eastside (including some
knowledge of place names, services and institutions in the neighbourhood). *
***

· Ability to think on your feet and work in a constantly shifting
landscape. ****

· Flexible schedule for about six weeks in June and July. ****
