[Wamvan] Suggestion for new venue

Hi everyone

Sorry to email bomb you - I just don't want all these separate issues to
get buried in an email chain 20 messages deep.

I have a suggestion for a new conference venue.  It is the Centre for Peace
on West 16th and Burrard.

It's a community space/building across the lane from a church (Canadian
Memorial United Church) but this space was created specifically for social
justice organizing, community functions, etc.  It's not very "churchy" is
what I'm saying.  It's just nice open space for gathering.

I called and it is completely available for March 31.  I'm giving more
thought to the idea of moving the conference into April because of venue
availability - on second thought I do not think we should.  If we can find
a place available on March 31 that would be better.  All the arguments
presented (easter weekend, moving away from the 'wam it yourself' week,
etc.) have convinced me it is not a good idea.

The thing is cost - to rent their one big space (Great Hall) is $470 for
the day.  To rent the room downstairs, which I was thinking we could use
for the music/interactive arts workshop, it is $190.  So that would be $660
in space alone, not including microphone and screen rental ($30 each).

I am thinking of asking my UBC women's studies student association for more
money on Monday, when we meet.  We originally allocated $1,000 for an event
that is happening this weekend, which is actually only going to end up
costing around $700.  So we will have $300 spare dollars - I'm hoping I can
convince everyone to give this extra money to us (on top of the $500
they've already pledged).

What do we think?
