Subject: New Interviews: Gilbert Achcar/Rachel Havrelock plus... End of
Year Wrap-Up and More!
To: upheavalproductions at gmail.com
*Greetings once again from Upheaval Productions!*
*As 2011 comes to an end we want to announce a couple new episodes in our
new video interview series, **Perspectives**, and recap some of what we've
released this year...*
Throughout 2011 David Zlutnick has been interviewing a variety of
individuals on topics ranging from the Mexican Drug War to the Arab
uprisings. With the two newest editions below we now have six episodes in
the *Perspectives* series, offering fascinating commentary and insight on
current events and global issues. Upheaval Productions plans on continuing
the series in 2012, but for now here are the latest two interviews, with
Gilbert Achcar and Rachel Havrelock, both on the subject of
Israel/Palestine:
*"The Arabs and the
Holocaust"**--*<http://www.upheavalproductions.com/articles/29>
*Gilbert Achcar* is a well-known commentator on political and economic
affairs in the Middle East and North Africa, and a professor at the School
of Oriental and African Studies at the University of London. His latest
book, *The Arabs and the Holocaust: The Arab-Israeli War of
Narratives<http://us.macmillan.com/thearabsandtheholocaust/GilbertAchcar>
*, was released last year. He discusses in this interview what he calls the
“Nazification” of the Arabs and the implications this narrative has had on
the past and present political situation in the Middle East. You can view
the video and also read a transcript
here<http://www.upheavalproductions.com/articles/29>
.
*"Israel's Mythological
Borders"**--*<http://www.upheavalproductions.com/articles/30>
*Rachel Havrelock* is a scholar of the Hebrew Bible and its interpretation.
She teaches at the University of Chicago and is the author of several
books, including her newly released *River Jordan: The Mythology of a
Dividing Line<http://press.uchicago.edu/ucp/books/book/chicago/R/bo11310203.html>
*. In this interview Havrelock argues that while certain Jewish biblical
interpretations favor expansion and conquest, others may provide an
inspiration for coexistence, while colonial ideas of partition and rigid
borders need to be thrown out to favor a new post-national model. You can
view the video and also read a transcript
here<http://www.upheavalproductions.com/articles/30>
.

*(For those interested who may have missed it: Another non-video interview
was conducted back in September** with **Haggai Matar**, an Israeli
journalist and activist, about Israel's J14 movement and its relation to
the Israeli-Palestinian conflict. You can find that interview

.)*
In addition to the above, this has been a big year for Upheaval
Productions, and we're excited about what we've accomplished. The first
part of 2011 was spent promoting and touring with our newly released
documentary, *Occupation Has No Future: Militarism + Resistance in
Israel/Palestine<http://www.upheavalproductions.com/articles/17/occupation-has-no-future-militarism-resistance-in-israel-palestine>,
*which examined the Israeli occupation of the Palestinian West Bank,
studied militarism in Israeli society, and explored the organized
resistance of Israeli and Palestinian activists. The film received an
enthusiastic reception across the country and even abroad. It was accepted
into several film festivals and continues to be shown on a consistent
basis.
>From *Occupation Has No Future*, another project was also created. Director
David Zlutnick pieced together some of the deleted scenes to make a short
documentary focusing specifically on the effects of the occupation on
Israeli soldiers through interviews with former soldiers themselves. The
video, *No More Shooting and
Crying<http://www.upheavalproductions.com/articles/26>
*, was also well-received and went on to win Art with Impact's 2011 New
Works Contest <http://www.artwithimpact.org/NWC_Winner> for short films.
2011 was a great year for us and we're looking forward to continuing with
production in 2012. Besides our films, interviews, and other work mentioned
above, we had the opportunity to collaborate on plenty of other projects
and work with some really incredible individuals and organizations, far too
long a list to mention here. As always, we want to extend a heartfelt thank
you to everyone who's helped support our work this year through donations,
purchasing our films, coming out to and/or organizing screenings, telling
friends about our projects, and so much more. If you would like to continue
supporting Upheaval Productions please visit our website and *consider
making a donation*<https://www.paypal.com/us/cgi-bin/webscr?cmd=_flow&SESSION=wQnTShQRfsQKcGB-pS8J8c02UXgDlOw_bsEXiI862kUWZjlKe1OJEIdwO8y&dispatch=5885d80a13c0db1f8e263663d3faee8db2b24f7b84f1819343fd6c338b1d9d60>or
you can
*purchase our films<http://www.upheavalproductions.com/articles/5/purchase-dvds>
* on DVD. All proceeds go back into ongoing projects and increasing our
capacity to create new media. And if you have any other ideas on how you
feel you might be able to contribute, please let us know.
*Thank you all once again, and make sure to have a very happy New Year!*
Sincerely,
*Upheaval Productions*
