WAM! Vancouver values preamble: *Sex work/prostitution:* WAM! Vancouver
supports the dignity of current and former sex workers/people in
prostitution and advocates for their safety. While individual members
of WAM! Vancouver have a wide range of opinions regarding the legalization,
decriminalization, or abolition of sex work/prostitution in Canada, as an
organization, WAM! Vancouver does not advocate for any one approach. Any
discussions about sex work/prostitution in WAM! Vancouver spaces (including
the listserv) or at WAM! Vancouver events shall abide by WAM!’s
core values, and not infringe upon the dignity of any person.
Esther: "Also, want to pass the word about the December 17 International
Day to End Violence Against Sex Workers March. The December 17 Day calls
attention to the hate crimes committed against sex workers across the world
as well as the need to remove the stigma and discrimination against them that
is perpetuated by custom and prohibitionist laws, all of which have made
violence against sex-workers acceptable. Please come to the march if you
possibly can and, as important, please encourage all the sex workers
supporters you know to join the march. If you can, bring a red umbrella –
noting that for sex workers, the red umbrella is used worldwide as a symbol
of resistance against violence and discrimination against them. This year’s
March is organized by Sex Workers United Against Violence (SWUAV). Here are
are the details from SWUAV:
5:30pm: Meeting at the Pivot Legal Society office for a press conference
and snack – Pivot is at 121 Heatley Aveue
6:00 – 6:15pm: Marching down to the tracks at Raymur and Cordova (under the
Hastings Viaduct).
6:15 – 7:00pm: We’d like to spend some time under the viaduct and get
creative with the space, including putting messages about sex worker rights
and safety on the walls under the bridge.
7:00 – finish: A walk with red lights and red umbrellas along Hastings to
Clark, then to Venables. We would then like to head up to the Prophouse
Café (on Venables near Commercial) for the planned celebratory event at
8pm, being organized by NakedTruth.ca."
