The associate editor at The Vancouver Observer wrote to say she's looking for a full-time, one-year contract environment and politics reporter to start Sep.1. Deadline for applications is Monday August 27 at midnight. The position starts September 1 but for the right candidate the start date is flexible by one or two weeks. Here's what she's looking for: "The ideal candidate will be a well-read individual who possesses exceptional narrative skills and has experience writing in-depth, research-based stories. The reporter will be expected to pitch original news stories, and write a minimum of 3 original news stories a week. This position is a great opportunity to work closely with and receive mentorship from our writers and editors. The candidate must monitor local and global news and be plugged into conversations relevant to politics and the environment. The candidate is expected to cultivate sources, and pitch original, high-impact stories. Some experience in multimedia storytelling is a plus, but a strong interest in politics (local, provincial and national) is essential. QUALIFICATIONS:Ability to work in a fast-paced environment with tight deadlines. Continuously seeking new sources and able to pitch original angles to news stories. Collaborative. Active on social media platforms (Twitter, Facebook, etc.) Knowledge of HTML and basic online writing/publishing functions. Familiarity with CP style as well as SEO. Post-secondary degree or diploma in journalism. The Vancouver Observer is the winner of the 2012 Canadian Journalism Foundation Excellence in Journalism award, 2010 winner Canadian Online Publishing Award for "Best online-only articles", and runner up in 2011 for "Best website in Canada."Applicants must be Canadian citizens or permanent residents.
