Lily Yuriko Shinde is a 64 year old Japanese Canadian lesbian, storyteller
and anti-racism educator and a long time political activist living in
Vancouver. She was one of the founding members of the first Third World
Womens group and Women of Colour group in Vancouver. She has been
involved with the Japanese Canadian politics, taught a course she created
called Feminist English in Osaka, Japan and played softball for the first
lesbian of colour team in the Mabel league for several years. She is
currently a member of the Greater Vancouver Japanese Canadian Citizens
Human Rights Committee.
This interview with Lily was conducted as part of NOII’s “Inheriting
Resistance: A Community History Project” to document the untold stories of
people in our communities who have been involved in and who have shaped a
diversity of social justice struggles on unceded Coast Salish Territories
over the past 20-40 years. We are committed to honouring the legacy of
those who have struggled before us – and in many cases, who still continue
to struggle alongside us – for social, economic, political, and
environmental justice.

No One is Illegal-Vancouver Coast Salish Territories is a grassroots
anti-colonial migrant justice group with leadership from members of
migrant and/or racialized backgrounds. We strive and struggle for the
right to remain, the freedom to move, and the right to return. As a
movement for self-determination that challenges the ideology of
immigration controls, we take action to combat racial profiling, detention
and deportation, the national security apparatus, law enforcement
brutality, and exploitative working conditions of migrants. The ongoing
apartheid reality instituted through reserves and sweatshops is one that
must be fundamentally uprooted and transformed. We envision a humanity
where everyone has the right to sustenance and the ability to provide it,
where we are free of oppression, misery, and exploitation, and are able to
live meaningfully in relationship to one another and in reverence for
Mother Earth that sustains us.
