This message comes after a lot of great articles, columns and blogs
documenting the sexist media treatment of female athletes (plus, of course,
critiques of the nationalist, racist, colonial aspects of the olympics).

Read below to learn about a contest the Miss Rep. org is holding - at the
end of the month, they're going to pick a campaign to amplify to a global
audience.

Cheers,

Natalie

Dear Natalie,

A series of studies
released<http://cts.vresp.com/c/?MissRepresentation/73fb54d0c1/1eb99f04bd/d6ee338f0d>this
week found that even at the Olympics - where for the first time ever,
every country has a female representative, and the U.S. has actually sent *
more* women than men to compete - the coverage of male athletes continues
to outnumber that of females. (Despite the
fact<http://cts.vresp.com/c/?MissRepresentation/73fb54d0c1/1eb99f04bd/9f5d5ba74c>that
more women are watching the events than men.) And, when women
*are* being covered at the games this year, they are often
sexualized<http://cts.vresp.com/c/?MissRepresentation/73fb54d0c1/1eb99f04bd/71d0f01271>or
reduced to observations on their
appearance<http://cts.vresp.com/c/?MissRepresentation/73fb54d0c1/1eb99f04bd/99cc1d8b19>
.

The coverage at the Olympics is, of course, no worse than the sexism women
and girls face everyday. It seems every week brings new examples of the
media objectifying, diminishing or completely ignoring women and girls in
our society.

When this kind of demeaning media influence is so prevalent, it feels
daunting to challenge. But we believe we *can* change the representation of
women and girls in our society - one step at a time. And we believe it
starts with you, on the ground, at the local level.

This month we are holding a contest to get real movement started in your
community! We want you to *pick a media issue *that matters to you, and
begin thinking about how to take action. Whether it's bringing down a
sexist billboard in New York or increasing gendered media literacy in
schools in Idaho, every one of us has the potential - just like 14
year-old Julia
Bluhm<http://cts.vresp.com/c/?MissRepresentation/73fb54d0c1/1eb99f04bd/d233ae7238>-
to spark big change.

At the end of the month, MissRepresentation.org will pick one of
*your*campaigns to amplify to a global audience. We'll throw our
support, and our
entire community, behind your cause!

*Step 1: This week, talk to your friends, family and neighbors, and decide
which issue you'd like to tackle.*

Onwards,

Jennifer Siebel Newsom & The MissRepresentation.org Team
