Making Waves: Spotlight on Canadian Women in Documentary

Vancouver, BC – The seminal work of Canadian women documentary filmmakers
has rippled out across the globe influencing the development of documentary
practice the world over. On May 10th, 2012, DOXA celebrates Canadian women
documentary filmmakers, past, present and future, with Making Waves, a full
day event with panels, interactive features and talks, capped off with a
gala screening of Brishkay Ahmedʼs new film Story of Burqa: Case of a
Confused Afghan.

Free panel discussions (1:30-5:00PM at the Roundhouse Community Centre)
will include everything from the critical importance of mentorship for
documentary filmmakers (Mentorship is Powerful), to the emergence of
webdocs (New Frontiers: Online Documentary), to what do funders really need
to hear from filmmakers, and vice versa (Funding Bodies and Minds). The day
will also feature the launch of Bear 71 - NFB Interactive Installation in
the Exhibition Hall of the Roundhouse (open daily from Thursday, May 10th
to Saturday, May 12th, 2012).

Additional films included in Making Waves are Leanne Allisonʼs Bear 71,
Elaine Carolʼs Stock Characters:The Cooking Show, Violette Daneauʼs The
Tightrope of Life, Rosie Dransfeldʼs Who Cares?, Èva Lamontʼs The Fallacy
(LʼImposture), and Pia Massieʼs Just Beyond Hope.

>From its emergence in the harems of Indian kings, to the influence of
British foreign policy, to the current ban in Sarkozyʼs France, the burqa
has been a flash point for economic, political and cultural struggle. With
humour, tenacity and the fierce intelligence, Brishkay Ahmedʼs new film
Story of Burqa: Case of a Confused Afghan picks apart the tangled threads
of Afghanistanʼs complex and complicated history to reveal the barefaced
facts.

The evening will also feature a live performance from Afghan singer Mozhdah
Jamalzadah, as well as a screening of the 2012 Kris Anderson Connexions
Youth Forum films.

DOXA Documentary Film Festival runs May 4–13, 2012. Tickets to the Opening
event at Saint Andrewʼs- Wesley United Church are $20. Single tickets for
all other screenings are $12 each plus a one-time $3 membership. Festival
Passes allow access to all films except Opening Night, and are available
for $150. Tickets are available at Peopleʼs Co-op Books, Zulu Records, and
online at www.doxafestival.ca.

For further information, call DOXA at 604.646.3200. DOXA is presented by
The Documentary Media Society, a Vancouver-based non-profit, charitable
society.
