It is arguable no doubt that W2 is part of the gentrification; however, it
was developed to be a niche available to the non-affluent community within
an otherwise very highly gentrified enclave (the Woodwards development). It
is used by people of low income and modest means who actually live in the
DTES. I've been to quite a few events at W2 and promoted others on the
radio. The first event in the new location, which I attended, was about
the child apprehension problem in the aboriginal community, organized by
local aboriginal organizations and mothers who had lost their children to
the state. CJSF held our two hour segment of the national community radio
Homelessness Marathon there in February. The same day, there was a big
media workshop for local aboriginal youth there as well. Clearly W2 seeks
groups that can pay to use the space and support its operating costs, but
they also provide the facility free to other events. I recommend people to
check it out for themselves.
