Hey Everyone,
I hope you're well.
I'm enclosing some information about VIFF 2011's environmental series here
(see below). The directors of Journey to the Wild Coast and Two Years at Sea
will be here and I can arrange interviews if anyone's interested.
I wouldn't want to continue to spam everyone - so let me know if you're
interested in more updates and I'll forward them to you directly. I'll also
have more information about women filmmakers in attendance and shall keep
you posted about that.
Thanks
Medha

Heaven and Earth, VIFF's Environmental Film Series
Once again this year VIFF has been inspired by the remarkable range of new
films that marry aesthetic pleasure and environmental sensitivity. There's
more to ecologically astute cinema than explicit admonishments to stop
destroying the planet, but of course, that's often where experiencing the
wonders of nature lead us. Whatever your politics, certain kinds of films
take us out-of-doors in marvelous ways, leaving us to draw our own
conclusions about how to better live our lives.
WWF-Canada is sponsoring this 5th edition of our environmental series, and
shares with us a particular focus on biodiversity, the health of water
systems, climate change and the sustainable coexistence of people and other
species.
Our theme *Heaven and Earth* points directly to a trend we've seen in many
of the best films this year. Perhaps reacting to the homogenization of
globalized culture, many young (and not so young) filmmakers are taking us
to remote places for direct encounters with antiquated lifestyles and nature
in the raw. Amidst the glories that these voyages represent, we also often
see meditations on disappearing history that are graceful, melancholic and
inspiring.
Here is a sampling of just a few of this particularly interesting subset of
cinema 2011.

LIFE ABOVE THE CLOUDS—A FAIRY-TALE VALLEY IN THE CARPATHIAN MOUNTAINS
Germany/Italy | Dir: Titus Faschina
*Life Above the Clouds* is a marvelous series made for European television
that we are inspired to present on the big screen. We will screen four of
the five series sections, all of which take us to remarkable locations on
the European continent where humans have managed, through perseverance and
in a most impressive manner, to establish themselves “above the clouds,”
despite all temptations of a simpler life further down below. Life at this
altitude is threatened by extinction. New EU directives make the traditional
forms of cultivation of many remote locations impossible, while the new,
younger generations dream and desire to take part in the new globalized
world of mobile phones and the Internet. Likewise, the regional
administrations and other institutions no longer concern themselves with
some of the distant locations, thus making them almost uninhabitable. The
series not only presents visually stunning and often extreme lifestyles
found somewhere between heaven and earth, but also tells of the remnants of
an ancient world that is soon to become part of the past.
VIFF program 1 combines *A Fairy-Tale Valley in the Carpathian Mountains*
with *A Monastery in the Pyrenees*. VIFF program 2 combines *In the White
Mountains of Crete* with *In the Hardangerfjord of Norway*. Bring your
binoculars! (FYI: the film we did not have room to include is *A Mountain
Farmer in South Tyrol*: we refer you instead to our Special Presentation of
the Austrian film *Heaven and Earth*).
