Greetings Wammers!
If you're like me then you'd agree that a social event where WAM! Van
organizers, supporters and generally interested folks can gather to scheme
about feminism, media and bringing down the patriarchy is LONG overdue.
Thankfully, the Vancouver International Film Festival kicks off and the end
of this month (huge shout-out to Frieda Werden for alerting us to all the
cool happenings at VIFF this year in a previous email), and there is one
film just beginning for a WAM! Van presence.
*
Miss Representation *(trailer here:
http://www.missrepresentation.org/home.html), is a film about the abhorrent
trends in representation of women in American media, using "... startling
facts and statistics that leave audiences shaken, armed with a new
perspective, and asking the question, “What can we do?”
While the film is based in an American context, it's meaning obviously
translates to the state of Canadian media, and the representation of women
globally.
*Miss Representation* is screening at VIFF on:
Fri, Sep 30th 1:15pm
Empire Granville 7
Sun, Oct 9th 6:40pm
Empire Granville 7
*Fri, Oct 14th 1:15pm
Empire Granville 7 *
We are proposing that we attend the Friday October 14th screening (1:15pm)
as a group, and follow it up with coffee/light lunch rant and rave. If you
are unable to make it to the screening, it would still be great if you could
see the film at one of the earlier screenings, then join us for our
post-film gathering on Friday afternoon.
*Please RSVP to **wamvancouver at gmail.com by Friday September 30* if you can
commit to attending. If we get a solid enough number we will look into
getting a group rate. If we are just a handful of folks, we'll let everyone
know to go ahead and book their own ticket, then meet up and affirm that we
are the only cool kids on this listserv.
