Heads up SFU students - WAM! Van has a project for you.
The small group of people on WAM!'s organizing committee (we're
affectionately calling ourselves WAM! CORE) have submitted a project to
Simon Fraser University's Public Interest Research Group (SFPIRG), for their
Action Research Exchange initiative.
In a nutshell, non-profits and cause-based organizations like us can submit
a project to SFPIRG, and if they accept it, they add to a list of optional
projects for SFU students to undertake as part of their studies in a
relevant course. SFU Profs and students alike are informed of the
initiative, and it's up to them to have a look at the list of possible
projects and pick one they like if they think it would make for a good
course project.
SFU students get a cool project to work on and (in exchange for course
credit), and local non-profits get an awesome student to do a project for
them for free. Win win!
WAM! Vancouver's proposal is a research project that explores the Canadian
Feminist blogosphere. Our project description:
*The researcher will survey both the landscape (i.e. number of blogs, number
of readers, etc.) and content of the “Canadian Feminist Blogosphere.”
Citizen journalism is a major part of the broader feminist discourse; there
are many US-based blogs that offer readers a critical analysis, but what
about Canadian content? The project will include a general survey of
Canadian feminist blogs, based on author’s self-identification. WAM!
Vancouver will provide a list of “hot topics” and the researcher will then
analyze if/how each blog addresses these topics*.
If you or anyone you know is a current SFU student and would be interested
in this project, please pass along!
