This summer we asked our supporters to help us launch Pivot's new “Yes in my

Three local YIMBYs stepped up and accepted the

Amanda, Rob and their son Julian will be opening up their backyard to us on
Sunday September 25th as we launch the kit and spread the word about the
role each of us has in building more inclusive and supportive communities. Come

join us as we celebrate the release of the toolkit and talk about
strategies for supporting progressive projects in our neighbourhoods.  There
will be games, food, and lots of interesting YIMBYs to connect with.

*When:* Sunday September 25th, 2pm- 6pm
*Where:* 1742 East 5th Avenue, Vancouver
*Who:* Anyone interested in building inclusive and supportive communities

NIMBY is an acronym for “not in my backyard” and is used to describe someone
who objects to something they perceive as unpleasant or potentially
dangerous when it is proposed in their own neighborhood. NIMBYism has popped
up in response to projects as diverse as community gardens, needle boxes,
group homes for disabled people, and emergency shelters.

YIMBYism is a lesser known but much needed antonym to NIMBYism. YIMBYs are
people who understand the value of addressing homelessness, addictions, and
mental illness in a proactive and positive way through safe and supportive
housing and are active in welcoming new projects and people into their
neighbourhoods.

We started to look at strategies for transforming NIMBY attitudes into YIMBY
when pressures from local residents opposed to the new Homeless Emergency
Action Team (HEAT) Shelters in their neighbourhoods contributed to two of
the much-needed shelters being closed ahead of schedule.

The new toolkit<http://pivotlegal.us1.list-manage.com/track/click?u=9a451e878eeec0a3e584da1a3&id=2689cb4e8b&e=0de74ccece>combines
tested strategies that have been used successfully in other cities
and lots of Vancouver specific information and ideas. There are lots of tips
that individuals and service providers can use to combat NIYMBYism and
mobilize support for important projects.
