GENDER VIOLENCE IN CONFLICT



JOB DESCRIPTION



SCOPE OF WORK:



The Coordinator of the International Campaign to Stop Rape & Gender Violence
in Conflict is responsible for the overall coordination and facilitation of
this exciting new global Campaign. Reporting to Nobel Women’s Initiative’s
Executive Director, she works in close co-ordination with the women peace
Laureates, other senior staff, the Campaign’s Ad Hoc Advisory Committee and
other Campaign members.



BACKGROUND:

A staggering number of women around the world will experience rape or other
violence in their lifetimes.  The UN Secretary General says 1 out of every
3.  Organizations and individuals around the world have been working long
and hard to stop rape and gender violence in conflict.  The International
Campaign to Stop Rape & Gender Violence in Conflict, spearheaded by the
Nobel Women’s Initiative, is bringing them together to develop and carry out
coordinated plans of action to help end this scourge. The Campaign will also
press for specific prevention, protection, and prosecution measures and
advocate for a dramatic increase in resources to support survivors and
achieve justice. The Ad Hoc Advisory Committee is developing a strategy for

Nobel Women's Initiative has accepted the responsibility to raise funds,
hire, house and supervise a Campaign Coordinator, whose primary
responsibility is working with Campaign members and others as described
below.



ROLES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:



·        Working in consultation with the Campaign Advisory Committee,
ensure effective coordination and implementation of the International
Campaign to Stop Rape & Gender Violence in Conflict’s action plan for 2012;

·        Develop and maintain relationships with Advisory Committee member
organizations and Campaign members; also liaise with other relevant actors;

·        Facilitate communication among Advisory Committee members;
documentation of Advisory Committee meetings; coordinate communication on
activities throughout the Campaign and externally;

·        Coordinate Campaign launch activities in the first quarter of 2012;
assist with other key international events and delegations, as requested, in
cooperation with Nobel Women's Initiative staff and relevant Advisory
Committee members;

·        Oversee the design and development of campaign resources, including
website, online and social media, advocacy campaign kits including
audiovisual materials, visual resources, and written materials;

·        Facilitate the sharing of critical resources, fact sheets and
campaigning tools on rape and gender violence in conflict useful for
furthering the advocacy objectives of the Campaign to all members as well as
the public, partners and governments

·        Facilitate the implementation of the Campaign media and
communications strategy;

·        In accordance with the priorities and Campaign work plan, oversee
monitoring of the activities of relevant regional, UN and international
bodies and sharing of relevant information to member organizations of
relevant events, outcomes and opportunities for advocacy

·        Work with Nobel Women's Initiative staff to ensure the development
and maintenance of relevant communications and administrative tools such as
databases, etc

·        Assist in the development of a Campaign fundraising strategy,
including identifying funding opportunities


REQUIREMENTS:

·        Passion for women’s rights, equality and justice; a belief that
organizations and individuals can change the world; demonstrated commitment
to international human rights issues in general, and stopping violence
against women in particular.

·        At least 8 years experience in developing and implementing advocacy
strategies to advance peace, justice and equality.

·        Experience in playing a lead role in developing and implementing a
campaign/s, experience in international advocacy with a coalition or
network.

·        Ability to work constructively in coalitions and to establish
consensus positions from differing points of view.

·        Excellent and proven communication and interpersonal skills with a
wide variety of multi-cultural, multi-lingual groups and actors.

·        Exceptional political judgment and strategic sense; good
understanding of international politics.

·        Excellent written and verbal English communication skills; fluency
in a second language is an asset.

·        Strong writing and editing skills, ability to write for various
audiences, and keen attention to detail; ability to produce clear, concise
written materials on tight deadlines.

·        Experience with online communications and social media.

·        Ability to work independently, with colleagues around the world, as
well as closely with a small collaborative team in the Ottawa office.

·        Extensive international travel required.

·        Minimum bachelor's degree in political science, human rights,
international relations or other related field.



Compensation: Commensurate with experience, including competitive benefits
package. One year with possible extension. (Position dependent on funding.)



Additional criteria: As this position will be based in the Ottawa office,
all applicants must be eligible to work legally in Canada for an extended
period of time.
