 Hello,
This was an escalation in the fight against proposals for additional pricey
condos in Vancouver.

Last night's skirmish occurred in the DTES, but the battlefield is the
entire city.  Condo buildings will cosmetically gentrify your neighbourhood
and simultaneously eliminate sites for housing co-ops, welfare- and
low-inome rentals for seniors, the working poor, and young families.

Surely now Vancouver has sufficient condos, condo towers, 'affordable'
condos, executive condos, tourist condos, condo 'amenities,' condo
trade-offs, condo 'public benefits' -- to satisfy the greediest of
condo-developers, -investors, -flippers, -speculators, and -landlords.

City Hall is another front in the condo battle. The primary function of
Councillors and Planners has become legitimizing and enabling the city's
predatory developers, architects, and investors.  For example, this week:

Development Permit Board and Advisory Panel -- Monday, November 28, 2011
Where: Council Chamber
Request: The development of a mixed use, transit-oriented complex
comprising of [sic] two residential towers of 26 and 35 storeys with a
STIR component, an office tower of 15 storeys, an 11 screen movie
theatre, a three storey retail podium and* five* levels of underground
parking, subject to Council’s enactment of the CD-1 By-law and
approval of the Form of Development. The project also includes the
construction of two neighbourhood *plazas* and a ground oriented
pedestrian *mews*.
