Laura Augustin, author of *Sex on the Margins: Migration, Labour Markets
and the Rescue Industry*, has long criticized NGOs, government leaders,
journalists, etc. for adopting a colonial rescue mentality in the ways they
address sex trafficking.

She recently wrote this scathing critique of New York Times columnist
Nicholas Kristoff's live-tweeting of brothel raids in Cambodia, where she
describes him as "preening, in love with himself, interfering,
condescending, happy to pose grinning with brown people and claim to be
saving them."

I'm working on developing a Master's thesis related to rhetoric around sex
trafficking and NGO work, so I'm curious to hear WAMmers' opinions of
Augustin and Kristoff's work, and the debate going on about how to best
address domestic and international sex trafficking. I know this is a loaded
topic, but if you have any tips or comments to share, I'd really appreciate
any feedback on- or off-list.

Augustin was recently interviewed

Thank you,

Joanna
