When ten-year-old Laure moves to a new neighbourhood for the summer
holidays, she impetuously introduces herself to the local kids as Michael,
a boy. With her short-cropped hair and asexual clothes she can easily pass
– and her kid sister plays along with the deceit. The trick works better
than she ever imagined: as a boy, she’s a hit. So she decides to keep it
up, even fashioning a little appendage out of clay to fit into her swimming
trunks. ****

This little gem from Water Lillies director Sciammi has such an unassuming
way about it you might almost miss her shrewd insights into gender
stereotypes. And the performances from young Zoe Heran and Malonn Levana
(as her six year old sibling) are simply delightful.****
