We are approaching the winter holiday season, and with it, the ubiquitous
appeals for charitable donations. The CBC will be hosting its 25th annual
Food Bank day this year and numerous other organizations will be soliciting
gifts of various kinds to be distributed to those in need. Yet after
decades of these annual cycles of charitable generosity, poverty is still
alive and well within our communities. So what would it mean to tackle the
root causes of poverty rather than focus on its temporary alleviation? What
would it take to establish justice rather than promote occasional acts of
charity? How might charity undermine justice rather than hasten its
actualization? These are the issues we want to explore at this evening
forum.****
