*WORKSHOP: *Seeing the Skeleton

*DETAILS: *Saturday November 26th, 3pm – 5pm

*FACILITATOR(S): Kathleen Flaherty* is a northern Albertan by birth, a
theatre director and dramaturge by training, a producer of radio drama and
documentary for CBC Radio by profession, and a lover of art and literature
by inclination. She has a BA in Political Science and a BFA and MFA in
Theatre. Her documentary work for CBC Radio’s Ideas program includes over
a hundred hour-long documentaries by freelancers as well as dozens of her
own, ranging in subject from the first novel ever written, to the effects
of residential school on a family, to the efficacy of medical screening
tests, to the history of Canadian nationalism. She is a founding member
of Narrative 360, a not-for-profit society to promote documentary in all
media.

*DESCRIPTION: *One way to think about how to organize material to tell a
story is a structural approach. Even before you go out in the field to
collect interviews and audio, you start to think about the story you are
going to tell and how you are going to tell it. Then you gather material
and think about it again. In this workshop, three major structures are
defined and considered in terms of a story that participants want to
tell. Each participant should have an idea for a Human Rights Day
program in mind. After hearing about a variety of structures,
participants will gather in groups of three, pick one story/program as a
test case, and figure out how it might be told in each of three ways. As
many as possible will share their thinking with the whole group. The
objective is to give radio storytellers another tool to creating dynamic,
interesting, and effective programs.

*WORKSHOP: *Basic Journalism Skills

*DETAILS: *Saturday November 26th,1pm - 3pm

*FACILITATOR(S): Pamela Post* is an award-winning CBC TV and Radio News
reporter, editor, writer, broadcaster, teacher and documentary producer,
with a reputation for outstanding journalism in the fields of health,
social affairs, arts and culture – with a strong track record in both
breaking and investigative news reporting. In 2004, she was awarded the
RTNDA Best Investigative Reporting Award for her CBC Radio News series on
Canada’s role in the global trade in human organs. She is the 2005 winner
of the Jack Webster Award for Best Radio Reporting for *The Brotherhood*,
her national CBC radio documentary and news series on sexual harassment
against female firefighters. Pamela is on the Journalism Faculty of
Langara College, and formerly Kwantlen Polytechnic University, where she
taught broadcast journalism. She has been an invited speaker to journalism
schools and classes and has mentored and trained dozens of new CBC
broadcast journalists, interns and practicum students. Pamela is also a
print journalist, editor and creative writer, opera librettist, public
speaker and panel moderator.

*DESCRIPTION:* In this 2-hour workshop, we will explore basic journalism
principles and best interviewing and story-telling practices – particularly
as they relate to broadcast journalism. What is a story? How do I find
it? We will look at the importance of finding and writing a ‘focus
statement’ before embarking on interviews and stories. We will learn how to
build a ‘checklist’ for a focus statement – the essential and basic
ingredient of a good, legitimate, story or interview. Journalistic
practices and standards: what is the difference between fact-based
journalism and commentary or editorializing? Ethics in journalism: what
guidelines do I need to follow? Objectivity versus Fairness and Balance.
Finding, choosing and booking the best guests. Interviewing techniques: how
do I put a guest at ease – and get the best, most compelling answers and
quotes from them? The art of preparation balanced with the art of
active-listening during an interview.

*WORKSHOP: I*nterview Skills

*DETAILS: *Saturday November 26th, 10 am – 12:30 pm

*FACILITATOR(S): Lorraine Chisolm* and *Jane Williams* are long-time
members of the Redeye collective at Vancouver Coop Radio. They have
scripted and conducted thousands of interviews on politics and culture.
Jane produces the Redeye podcast for rabble.ca and has actively worked to
make Coop Radio a sustainable independent voice. Lorraine has worked
extensively on developing training resources to strengthen community
broadcasting and media democracy. They believe the right information in the
right hands can change the world.

*DESCRIPTION:* This highly interactive workshop in interview skills will
be useful to radio interviewers at all levels of experience. It provides a
fast paced introduction to key practices that lead to engaging and focused
interviews. You will learn how to focus you interview, do the right amount
of research, master the pre-interview, develop a script of questions, and
get some key pointers on hosting an interview.

*WORKSHOP: *Music Show Basics

*DETAILS: *Saturday November 26th,1pm - 3pm

*FACILITATOR(S): *Panel with Gwedolyn Reischman, Michael Willmore, ita
Kane, and Nou Dadoun

Although a life-long culture addict, *Gwendolyn Reischman* has only been a
host/operator/producer of programming on Co-Op Radio since 1986. It seems
she began her volunteer career hosting ‘Radio Ranch’ motivated by an
extreme excitement over the power of stringband music to move her to tears.
Her desire to share this excitement refuses to fade.

If music is a universal language is stands to reason some of the ‘root
words’ are the same. Gwendolyn has said that discovering the ways in which
musical ideas are shared between far flung humans is fun to figure out and
easy to appreciate.

Old-time music is a very ‘au currant’ form that’s gathering sophisticated
young players and waves of new listeners. Both Bluegrass and Old-time are
dance music so regular listeners know to clear the living room and turn the
radio up.

You can catch Gwendolyn the fifth Sunday of the month from 2:30 to 4 pm on
Vancouver’s cooperative radio station, CFRO, 102.7 FM.

*Michael Willmore* was born and raised in Vancouver. He went to Vancouver
School Of Art, Emily Carr, majoring in Design/Painting. He became involved
with Co-Op Radio in 1974, building shelves and going to meetings. Back
then, he made a program proposal to do a regularly scheduled music show
about the History of Rock Music to the newly formed Program Committee. When
Co-Op Radio finally went on air in 1975, "Rock Talk" was the first Music
Show approved for a regular time slot. The show continues to this day,
Friday mornings at 9:00 am. on Co-Op Radio, CFRO at 102.7 FM. So it has
been on the air now for 36 years! In addition to this Radio Show, in 2005,
Michael began producing and hosting a TV Show called "Rockinitis" which is
kind of like a new visual version of his Music History Radio Show. It is
shown 4 times a week on Shaw, Cable 4 on Mondays at 10:30 am/10:30 pm and
Tuesdays at 19:30 am, and Friday Midnights.

*WORKSHOP: *Engaging Community

*DETAILS: *Saturday November 26th, 3pm – 5pm

*FACILITATOR(S):* *Naveen Girn* has worked for over 10 years in the
broadcast industry in Vancouver in both radio and television. On the air,
he has a wide variety of experience hosting magazine programs, morning
shows, afternoon programs and interviewing guests for live talk shows. He
has also done radio voice-over work for advertisements. As one of the
co-curators and main researcher for the Museum of Vancouver exhibit
Bhangra.Me: Vancouver's Bhangra Story, he collected hundreds of hours oral
history interviews. He produced, shot, edited and uploaded
mini-documentaries for Bhangra.me and created television ads for the
exhibition and the Museum as well. Currently, he works with SFU as a
Cultural Researcher on their upcoming project Komagata Maru: Continuing the
Journey where Naveen is conducting scholarly interviews, community outreach
and oral history collection.

combine all three pursuits in making radio documentaries. Paolo’s docs have
received a Peabody Award and the Prix Italia, the highest accolades in
broadcasting, as well as several other awards. They have been broadcast in
Canada, the USA, the UK, Australia, New Zealand, Germany, Finland and

of the stage. He is a former Technical Director at the Western Front and
Inlet Theatre, and currently is Resident Technician at SFU's new Woodwards
campus. Ben is active creating music for dance and theatre, earning a
Jessie Richardson award nomination in 2006 for his original music. In 2008

broadcasting at CiTR 101.9FM, launching *Rhymes and Reasons* with The
Tessimist and DJ9 - the station's first hip hop show with women dropping
the beats. From there, she won the hearts of hip hop insomniacs with the
late program *INSOMNITRAX *(96.1FM), graduated with honours from the
Broadcast Communications program at BCIT, and even filed traffic reports
from CKNW's "Eye In The Sky" before joining CBC as host on Radio 3, and
Music Producer for *Definitely Not the Opera*. Last year, Lauren joined
the City of Richmond as a Media Arts Specialist, teaching media skills to
youth. She also sits on the Board of Screaming Weenie Productions, a queer
theatre company in Vancouver with a mission to produce and promote queer
and sex positive performance. Lauren is currently raising a family in
Vancouver.

*DESCRIPTION:* You make radio magic in the studio, now let's take the show
on the road! In this workshop, participants learn about various types of
microphones and portable digital recorders, then use the recorders provided
