All-
I’m beyond honored to be attending the Nobel Women’s Initiative’s conference
on Ending Sexual Violence in
Conflict<http://www.nobelwomensinitiative.org/blogs/newsecurity/post/join-us>,
at which over 100 women from around the world – activists, academics,
security experts, corporate leaders, and Nobel Peace Laureates Jody
Williams<https://secure.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/en/wiki/Jody_Williams>,
Shirin Ebdai <https://secure.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/en/wiki/Shirin_Ebadi>and
Mairead
Maguire <https://secure.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/en/wiki/Mairead_Maguire> –
are coming together next week to forge a new security, and a future free of
sexual violence in conflict. You can read a great (though definitely
trigger-warning-worthy) overview of the issue and the conference’s approach
to it here<http://www.ottawacitizen.com/news/Nobel+laureates+launch+campaign+against+rape+weapon/4817206/story.html>
.
I'll be liveblogging from three of the key sessions at Feministe - here's
details on what/when/who<http://www.feministe.us/blog/archives/2011/05/22/ending-sexual-violence-in-conflict-liveblogging-the-nwi-conference/>.
Let me know if you'd also like to host the liveblog on your site. Even if
you just encourage folks to click over to Feministe, I'd love your help in
encouraging people to tune in and participate remotely.
The conference will culminate in Thursday’s Day of Action to End Sexual
Violence in Conflict<http://www.nobelwomensinitiative.org/blogs/newsecurity/post/may-26-online-day-of-action>.
It's easy to participate -- on Thursday, encourage your
audience/readers/collleagues/networks to a) follow the livetweet of the
event the Laureates are having live in Ottawa that morning, b) watch and
share short videos (that we'll be providing) throughout the day, and c) take
action by writing a letter to your elected officials to urge them to
prioritize this issue. A sample letter and contact info for officials in
many countries can be found here <http://www.stoprapenow.org/take-action/>.
If you'd like to participate in the Day of Action, please let me know so we
can get you on the distro list so you'll be the first to get all the
details, the videos, and more materials as they come.
Addressing the issue of sexual violence in conflict is an incredibly complex
and daunting task. But this conference has the potential to reinvigorate the
movement to do just that, and to infuse it with new thinking and new
strategies. I'm excited to get involved, and I hope you'll join me.
