*Welcome! *

Just wanted to send out a note to welcome our new members! This listserv was
launched on April 30. You can review all our previous conversations and
event listings here: https://lists.resist.ca/cgi-bin/mailman/listinfo/wamvan.
Just click on "Wamvan archives."

You can send a message out to the listserv anytime by emailing:
wamvan at lists.resist.ca

You should have already received a welcome message outlining the purposes
and guidelines of participation on this listserv. If you did not receive the
welcome message or if you have any questions, please let me know.

Please note that you must use the email that you subscribed with (for those
who signed up at the conference, we used the email you provided on the
form). Otherwise, your message will not go through.

*Introduce yourself! *

If you have a moment, please consider introducing yourselves. I'm attaching
my personal intro to the end of this email.

*Social events *

You may have noticed that we have been planning our first WAM Vancouver
social event. Frieda, from CJSF Radio, was able to get us discount group
tickets to the film, "Women, Art, Revolution" at $6/ticket. This documentary
of a part of Vancouver's DOXA documentary film festival.

We will be meeting tomorrow in front of the Vancity Theatre on Granville
Street at 8:45 pm. If you would like to come, please let us know, but you
can also get tickets at the door (you should probably arrive early in case
tickets sell out).

If you have ideas for other social events or training forums, please suggest
them! You can always offer to plan or host events as well.

And while our listserv so far has been focused on discussions about
media/activism-related events in Vancouver, please feel free to bring up a
more complex topic for discussion!

You can reach me at 778 388 9176 or at wamvancouver at gmail.com.

Thanks for joining our community!

About me:

I'm a freelance journalist, editor and media consultant. I write primarily

about feminism, social justice and human rights. You can read some of my
work on my website: www.joannachiu.com. In addition to writing, I also help
non-profit organizations with their media communications.

I've been involved in activism and non-profit work from a young age. As a
12-year-old kid in middle school, I was known to my fellow classmates as the
"scary feminist." Since then, I've volunteered and worked for non-profits

like Oxfam Canada, AWARE Canada, and Antigone Magazine (co-host of the WAM
conference).

Last year, I did a magazine internship at The Nation magazine. While in New
York, I got involved in the WAM New York chapter, and was able to meet some

great mentors and allies. That's why I wanted to help bring WAM to Canada.

That's all for now. If you have any questions about what I'm about, just
ask. :)
