Yes, I read this today, too.
I think that the author was very brave to write the article, as she probably
knew she would stir up controversy and confusion. I don't quite understand
why having staged violent sex was so therapeutic for her, and I figure that
there's no way I would understand unless I had experienced what she
experienced in her work.
A broader point though is that I think it's very important to direct
attention to the traumas that reporters face themselves as they are
reporting on horrific events. A lot of people still expect journalists to be
objective and passive observers, but that is quite unrealistic. With all the
physical and emotional risks that journalists (esp. correspondents in
dangerous areas) face, I think they need more support and understanding from
the communities they're coming from.
What do others think?
