One of the amazing pieces of Hope in Shadows is the narrative that emerges
from the calendar project every year. The photos and captions tell stories
that portray the humanity, beauty, and struggle of the Downtown Eastside

Every year 200 Downtown Eastside community members step out into the world
with a camera. One of our photographers, Lorraine, speaks to this unique
experience<http://pivotlegal.us1.list-manage.com/track/click?u=9a451e878eeec0a3e584da1a3&id=0c893ad3c0&e=0de74ccece>,
“I quickly gained a respect for how much hard work it is to meet this
challenge of photographing your thoughts and feelings and relationships to
things around you and the people in your life.”

The photographers have truly risen to the challenge this year. They have
captured such expressive portraits of the community. Lorraine continues, “So
much insight is gained about yourself in doing a project like this with the
camera as your voice and your inner thoughts and kind moments with others as
your teachers.”

We are currently interviewing the winning photographers and their subjects
in preparation for the production of the 2012 calendar. Help Hope in Shadows
