Indigenous Communities Program Manager
Overview
The Ending Violence Association of BC (EVA BC) is seeking an Indigenous Program
Manager to manage initiatives related to violence against Indigenous
women and
children in BC. The term “Indigenous” is inclusive of people who are
First Nations,
Status and Non Status, Métis and Inuit.
The objective of this two year position is to manage various related
projects focused on
increasing the safety of Indigenous women and children from violence.
The work will
include a focus on improving access to justice for Indigenous people
in BC through the
provision of public legal education materials, training and building
safety plans. The
project will provide training to Indigenous staff and leadership
within Indigenous
organizations in BC, on and off Reserve, including band social
workers, band health
care workers, friendship centre staff and others related to criminal
justice, family justice
and child protection laws, policies and practices that directly affect
responses to
domestic and sexual violence and child abuse.
Working closely with EVA BC and our partner on this initiative, Legal
Services Society
(LSS), the Program Manager will take a leadership role in providing
information to
Indigenous organizations across BC in the area of violence against women.
Qualifications
• An Indigenous person who will work out of the EVA BC office in Vancouver
• Masters Degree in related area, or equivalent combination of education and
experience.
Demonstrated Understanding of First Nations, Status and Non Status,
Métis and Inuit
communities, including:
o Current social contexts, including on and off reserve
o Governance - hereditary, elected, other structures
o Cultures, traditional practices and beliefs
o Culturally relevant social and economic programs and services
• Demonstrated Understanding of Violence Against Women, including:
o Dynamics of sexual violence and violence against women in relationships
o Impacts on women, children and communities
o Local, regional and federal contexts, services, policies and laws
o Coordinated responses among responders
• Research skills, particularly within context of Indigenous people
and communities
and violence against women
• Advanced writing and verbal communication skills• Demonstrated
experience writing briefs, fact sheets, and curricula
• Demonstrated experience with group facilitation, delivering relevant
training and
public speaking
Responsibilities
• Conduct research and collect all relevant legal materials, laws,
policy, legislation and
case law
• Adapt existing legal education publications and fact sheets and develop new
materials, as needed
• Develop scripted curriculum and fact sheets for various presentation formats
• Conduct community workshops for Indigenous services providers and Indigenous
communities
• Organize province-wide videoconference to reach rural and remote Indigenous
communities
• Train other workshop leaders on the curriculum
• Oversee design of the evaluation framework and work closely with an evaluator
• Organize ongoing debriefing and support for trainers
• Gather, collate and analyze feedback
• Conduct evaluation, including interviews and data analysis
• Write all project reports
Requirements
• Willingness to travel throughout BC to remote, rural communities
• Hold a valid drivers license
